Just wondering - what did it cost you to put in wood flooring if you had to replace your carpet? We are moving soon (closing this Friday!) and there is carpet throughout, and I just can't with our dogs. I think we're looking at about a 400sqft space (living, dining, hallway). I know it varies etc etc but just wondering what i'm really looking to spend - thanks!

The hardwoods that I usually specify run $7-$22 a sq. ft. plus installation.

We just replaced carpeting in our nursery with dark cinnamon maple solid hardwood floors from Home Depot and the cost was $6.98/square foot, and we installed it ourselves (had to rent equipment, can't remember cost for those pieces, and it took all day to install).
We will be building our next home and for full house wood floors (minus only the bathrooms) the builder's estimate for solid maple wood floors is $20,000 including installation for a 2500 square foot home. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'm trying to research and it's just like I have no idea if it'll be 4k or like 10k! I definitely do want quality hardwood flooring since we plan on staying here for a long long time.

Installation usually costs what materials cost so, if your floors are $1500, total cost will be around $3000. We've looked into them for after our older, carpet pee-er heads to the big field in the sky, and you can find some nice ones on sale for $3-$4/sf. -
@mediagirl: I work in a nutso market where it's normal to spend $100k on just the floor material not including installation. But I will say that the 8" walnut planks are gorgeous.

@chibee: You may want to research laminate or engineered hardwood since you have a dog. Real wood (or even engineered) will scratch. Not necessarily to the point that the stain of the floor is removed, but dented where you can see it in the right light. Most laminate does not do this.

@thehistoryofus that is definitely something to think about. i have 2 dogs - 2 chihuahuas, 1 at around 8lbs and 1 at 4lbs - do you think they can still scratch up the wood? realistically, i don't think we can put in the flooring for a couple of months but i can't stand carpet!!

I just want to add that we have laminate in our new house and it is already scratched to hell, and we've only been there about a month. I think it's from our cat, not our dog -- he runs from the dog and SLIDES down the hallway and I can hear his claws. Our hallway is the worst, there are scratches all up and down it. But we didn't put it in, the sellers did (brand-new though, it was flipped), so I don't know if it's "high quality" or anything.

@chibee: You would be surprised what little animals can do. Often they have sharper nails.
I do think it just depends on the quality of the wood/laminate. Again, ours isn't scratched more just indenteded. We have a handscraped so it kinda blends.

To give you a general idea, putting hardwood in the living room/hallway/kitchen of our condo was between $4-5k including removal, wood, installation, underlay and moving furniture. That's everywhere but the bed and bath of our 750 sq foot condo, so probably a comparable area to yours.

The only caution I would give against putting in laminate (which we originally planned to do since it's cheaper and we plan to move in the next few years so we didn't need a forever solution), is several friends said their laminate started warping soon after it was installed....and that it is especially problematic if the floor surface you are starting with isn't exactly 100% even in every spot. I don't know what type of laminate flooring they used though.

if you are worried about them scratching, depending on what kind you have put in, you can have them come in and put a top coat on every 6 months or so to keep them looking new. i thought this was insane until i heard how much more $$ it is if you wait and they have to sand them and fully refinish them. ouch!
we have very soft bamboo floors in our rental, so we didn't have any say in what was put in, but i wouldn't use the same ones after having them. my heels have left marks in them, even with 'wood safe' feet on our furniture, they've gotten dents in them. our neighbors were dog sitting for a wk end and their floors have marks all over them now. granted, we probably have lower end bamboo, but they're less than 3 years old. i love the pergo floors my parents have, even in their bathroom they look awesome where you couldn't really expect regular wood to hold up with the moisture.

We just put new strand bamboo floors in our kitchen. The cost for materials was around $4.65 sq/ft I believe. We had a handyman friend take up the old floor and install it for us, so we saved some money on labor. The sample we looked at in the store held up pretty well against wear and tear, although I don't know what dogs could really do. If they get really bad (they look great so far), we can always sand them down - although I am not looking forward to that project!
