Could this be a miscarriage?

I don't personally know, but I'm keeping you in my thoughts! If it makes you feel any better that happened to once during my first trimester and it luckily stopped after two days and my LO ended up okay.

I'm so sorry you're going through this right now! Like PP's I'm not sure what's going on, it is generally accepted that brown blood = okay, red blood = bad. In my first pregnancy I spotted brown from my BFP until the day I actively miscarried. Meanwhile I'm currently 27 weeks pregnant (subsequent pregnancy) and had so many bright red bleeds and incidences of spotting it wasn't even funny- the medical students in my OB's practice think I'm terribly interesting!

I'll be hoping for a good update from you!

@Boogs: Thanks! That DOES make me feel better!

@JessicaMcB: Do you mind me asking how far along you were when you miscarried? And that's crazy you've experienced so much bleeding during your current pregnancy! That must freak you out!!! I'm glad things are going well for you though!

@Adira: I was going for six weeks when my body finally let go. With this very dramatic little girl we had minor red bleeds at 4, 6, and 8-10 weeks, spotting at 11 weeks and a massive hemmorage at 13 weeks. I had some later bleeding too (21 and 23 weeks?) but they chalked it all up to SCH's, marginal placenta previa and an irritated cervix. I was convinced every time we lost her, but she's been fine every time- I hope its the same for you minus all the crazy bleeding episodes!

@JessicaMcB: Wow, that's crazy! I'm glad your pregnancy is still going strong despite all the crazy bleeding you had to deal with!

My miscarriage started with pink spotting that by morning was bright red, accompanied by awful cramps.

I hope everything is okay, and you're in my thoughts today!

I had bleeding with all 3 of my pregnancies (one of them was an ectopic pregnancy/miscarriage and two successful ones). With the first one (ectopic), I had brown blood and side cramps. At around 8-9 weeks, the brown blood turned into red blood so I went in for an ultrasound and they confirmed it was an ectopic pregnancy. The 2nd one (my son), I had brown blood again but not as much as with the first miscarriage. It was only there when I wiped. Then with this pregnancy, I had brown blood again but only when I wiped. So bleeding (especially brown blood) can be normal. Crossing my fingers for you!!!! Hope everything turns out ok!!!

@FutureMrsMcK: Thank you for your story! I'm sorry you had to experience a miscarriage, but I appreciate hearing what happened to you. *hug*

@banana: Thank you for your story! I'm glad that you had two successful pregnancies and that brown blood can be normal. When you had your miscarriage, had you seen your doctor before the 8/9 week mark when the bleeding turned red? Just curious if things looked normal up to that point?

Honestly I would risk the suspicion of leaving work early to get in to see your doctor. You are just going to worry yourself until you know for sure what's up, and that's not good for you or baby.

With my miscarriage I had light brown spotting that started on a Friday night and continued until Monday morning when I woke up to lots and lots of bright red blood and cramping. With my current pregnancy (so far sticky at 21 weeks) I have had a number of spotting incidents. But each time the spotting never lasted more than an hour or so. I was checked out each time and so far baby is doing great. Doc just thinks I have an especially sensitive cervix and the blood is coming from there and not from the baby.

@adira: No, that was the first time I had seen my OB (when the bleeding turned red). I did call them though (at around 6/7 weeks and explained the brown spotting but they said it could be normal and that if it turned red, to call them. So that's what I did. With my next pregnancy, I freaked out when I saw the brown blood again and insisted I see the OB. He checked my hormone levels and confirmed I was pregnant and that my levels were increasing. So everything looked fine. The brown spotting continued for another month or so and then stopped. If you feel really worried, I would just call your OB and ask them to see you. They can take some blood tests to check your hormone levels and at least give you some answers.I know that for me, the "not knowing" was driving me bonkers and freaking me out.

I hope for a positive outcome for you!!! I'll be crossing my fingers and thinking of you!!!

i was lightly spotting between weeks 4-8. it was mostly light brown or dark brown. during week 7, it got really heavy and was a dark red. i even passed a red clot alittle smaller than a dime! turns out baby was fine and i'll be at 20 weeks on sat!! so it seems like you have something similiar to what I had. still not sure what it was but everything turned out okay!

@MamaMoose: Thank you for sharing your story! I guess I feel worried, but not to the point where I'm stressing myself out. I feel like whatever is going to happen is going to happen regardless. Plus, I keep going to the bathroom every hour (haha, I'm such a loser) and it seems like just light spotting at the moment. It's definitely not getting worse, at least not yet. I think I'll be okay to wait until tomorrow.

@banana: I'm surprised your OB didn't have you come in when you called about your spotting/bleeding! When I called, I figured they would just tell me to wait until my appointment next week, but she said that whenever there's bleeding during pregnancy, they like to have you come in and get checked out. Hopefully it's nothing, but I am glad they want to see me instead of just making me wait another week. Although I think even if things look okay now, I'll be worried until I make it out of the first trimester.

@kodybear: Oh wow! That's crazy!!! I think if I experienced what you did (with the red bleeding and a clot), I would just assume I miscarried! I'm so glad that everything is fine for you though! Hopefully the same is true for me!

@adira: I was surprised too cause I thought they saw all patients who had some bleeding. But I guess because it was brownish, they didn't think they needed to see me? I dunno! Anyhow, glad you'll be seeing your OB. It'll at least give you some answers!

@banana: Yeah, I'm sorry you had to go through that! I'm glad that everything's going well for you this time around! I'm really hoping my OB tells me everything's fine, haha.

@Adira: I hope everything is OK!! I had a miscarriage around 6 weeks. It started as light brown spotting (occasionally) for a few days. Then, one morning I woke up to period like cramps and heavy bleeding. Keeping you in my thoughts.!!

@winniebee: Thank you! Based on your experience, it sounds like I'm not out of the woods yet. Hopefully my appointment goes well tomorrow and the spotting stops, but even if all that happens, I think I'll STILL be nervous until I hit at least 12 weeks.

@Adira: My sister has had bleeding in all 3 of her pregnancies and everything was fine! It sucks because it can be totally normal or a miscarriage My spotting was for 3 days (very light, brown) and then I had the miscarriage. But once I started bleeding I didn't stop - it was pretty unmistakeable.

I had a bleeding issue that was very similar to yours. One instance of a dark red/brown bleed, followed by brown spotting. For me it turned out to be a cervical issue. Same thing also happend to a friend of mine, and it was in the 5.5-7.5 week range for us. We're both due within the next two weeks, and have been fine since.

Hopefully when you see your DR tomorrow, you will get some peace of mind!

@winniebee: Hmmm, thanks for the info. I definitely appear to still be spotting, but I think it's lightening up? It's hard to tell because I keep checking it every hour, haha. I probably need to give it like 3 hours to do something to really tell WHAT'S going on.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: Thank you for sharing your story! That definitely sounds similar to what I'm experiencing and I'm sooooo glad that everything was fine for you and your friend! Hopefully I get similar news!

@Adira - I had brown spotting (sometimes with mild cramping, sometimes without) on and off for about 3 weeks before I miscarried @ 7 weeks. When the actual miscarriage happened, I had very painful cramps, worse than any period I've ever had, and passed a small sac w/ an embryo (sorry if that's TMI)!

With this pregnancy, I had one or two episodes of brown spotting along with somewhat painful cramping around 6 weeks. I was terrified thinking I was miscarrying again, but all ended up being okay and I haven't had any spotting since (20 weeks now).

Best of luck to you. Hoping you get good news.

@78h2o: Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm sorry you had to experience a miscarriage, though I appreciate being able to hear about it. I'm glad that you're currently experiencing a healthy pregnancy! I'm definitely looking forward to my appointment tomorrow - hopefully I get good news, but I have no idea what they're even going to do, if there's even anything they CAN do at this point.

@Adira: How are you feeling? Has the spotting stopped or gotten worse? I don't know how you have so much self control. I would have left work and taken the appointment today but I tend to be dramatic. However you are right, if you are (which I'm praying you're not) mcing then there is nothing they can do. Keeping you in my thoughts!

@alison206: You're so sweet to check up on me! I'm doing fine. The spotting has not stopped, but it's very light and definitely hasn't gotten any worse. I THINK it might be lightening up, but it's hard to tell because I go to the bathroom so often, haha. I probably should've just gone to the OB today so I don't have to wonder all day and night about what's going on, but oh well. Too late now!

@Adira: When we went through our miscarriage, there was dark spotting for a few days, and then more than spotting but still dark for a few more days. We didn't see bright blood for nearly a week, when the actual miscarriage happened. I'm glad you are going in to see your doc tomorrow. We were nearly 7 weeks when it happened.

@Adira: Just an additional FYI. When I had spotting with each of my pregnancies it was due to low progesterone. With the first two we didn’t catch it fast enough/didn’t medicate it strongly enough and it kept dropping until I lost the babies. With my current pregnancy they really stayed on it and increased my dosage. I know that not every MC is a progesterone issue but if you aren’t actively miscarrying it’s worth them checking because it’s really easy to help with medication. Just so you know. Sometimes there is something that they can do (though, obviously, not always).

@MaisyMay: Oh yikes! Thank you for sharing your story. I'm trying to be both cautiously optimistic and preparing for the worst, which is hard to do, haha.

@Running Elley: Definitely good to know! Depending on what my doctor says, I might bring that up and ask if that's a possibility.

@Adira: The only reason they checked on my first one is because they knew that I’d had low progesterone issues in the past. There are quite a few symptoms that manifest themselves during your cycle even when you’re not pregnant. It may be worth a google search to see if any of them sound familiar!

@Running Elley: Thanks for the advice! I will definitely head to Dr. Google now!

@Adira: I second the checking progesterone. We had it check this pregnancy and it was lower than they liked. I had to use suppositories twice a day for almost 6 weeks. After just a few days, they did follow up blood work and the levels were better.

I just saw this -- how are you feeling? I had spotting ranging from brown to BRIGHT RED OMG from 6 to 8 weeks, and it eventually just stopped. I didn't really have cramping, but I did have lots of dull pressure goin' on. It eventually stopped! Actually I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks, then another at 7 and I had gotten used to the scant brown spotting, but I went to the bathroom right before my transvaginal, and all of a sudden there was bright red in the toilet, on my underwear -- it was horrible. But there was a nice little bean and heartbeat, and no sign of why I was bleeding. By my regular appointment the following week at 8 weeks, it had stopped and nothing since. I'm 11 weeks now. Hang in there and update us tomorrow!
