I think it could work for my son, but my daughter's middle name is her mom's first name! So that might be a little weird.

DD1 has my last name (I didn't change my name after marriage) as her middle name. So, it would be weird.

Yup. Catherine and Charles. Both of which were considered as first names (they are family names).

Absolutely! I always think it's weird to give your child a strange middle name they can't actually use or would have to explain.

@youboots: ditto.
Mae (my grandma's nickname) and Amelia. Both lovely first names.
pomelo / 5573 posts
Yes, their middle names are much more traditional than their first names - John and Thomas.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
Nope, it's a last name (my middle/mom's maiden). Dd2 will also have a last name as a middle-- my maiden which is sill part of my last name (I have a double last name after marrying)

DD's middle name is a family last name (Sommer), but we did consider it for a first. I just couldn't handle it being misspelled as Summer all the time though (they are pronounced the same).
DS's middle is Alexander, so obviously that would work.

Yes it's actually DH middle name too ,Arthur, which is more traditional than his first name

Yes. And actually, each time we have another girl, I kick myself for using a name I would have loved to use as a first name as a middle name for the previous daughter!!!
persimmon / 1367 posts
Sure, but I don't love the name itself so I wouldn't (it is a classic family name that I would never pick otherwise).
pomelo / 5258 posts
My son's yes. My daughter, no. I used a family name that is a common adjective like "tough."
persimmon / 1322 posts
Yes, it would be a lovely first name. I actually preferred it to her first name when we were deciding what to name her.

@OldpuebloJenn: same here! And it definitely doesn't work as a first name.
honeydew / 7917 posts
No, it's my maiden name. Our last name can be used at their first name. It's actually really bothersome because we have to correct people often for switching the first and last name.

Yep, both of them have middle names that were also on the short list for first names.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
No, I think his middle name works as a first name for a girl, but it is a surname.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Yes, all three LOs middle names are classic traditional names that would work as first names just fine. In fact, my dad and a few other family members call DD2 by her middle name and I love it!
grapefruit / 4988 posts
Technically yes, but I would feel too weird to. Her middle name is my mom's name (my mom died a few years ago). I can't imagine my dad calling her by my mom's name.

Yep, Charles and Eleanor. Charles is my MIL's maiden name!
persimmon / 1270 posts
Lo1 and soon to be lo2 both have middle names that might have been their first names. I had a big panic a few days after lo1 was born that we should switch them, but now I am happy we kept it this way.

No, yes, yes.
My girls each share their middle names with a grandparent. FIL's middle name (and DD1's) is his mother's maiden name. It's the French word for young.
My second shares with my mom and her mom. My third share with my dad, his dad, and my great grandfather. We used the feminine version.

Yes it would be a very nice first name, my father's name. We just prefer for the kids to have their own name and a family name as middle name. I have no idea what we'll name the next kid but I think it'll follow this theme!

It's possible. But she wouldn't like it because she associates it with 2 other girls in class with the same name.

Yes. His first middle name is my maiden name and it's a very common boys name.
His second middle name is DH's first name.
pomegranate / 3350 posts
LO1 - I could but I don't really like the name (honor name)
LO2- If we used the full name rather than a nickname because it's a variation of DH's name with the same nickname. I love his middle name and we have been asked why we didn't choose it as a first name.

You could for both DS and DD, but I would never use DD's as a first name because there are too many interpretations for how to pronounce it. I'd hate for her to have to constantly explain or correct people. It's Lucia and we pronounce it loo-see-uh. DS' is Cole and that was actually my first choice for a long time.
