I used to work at an assisted living, and it was pretty hard for me to deal with people passing away. But I always felt good about what I did. My grandma's in hospice and the first thing I thought about when I went there was no way could I ever work there. It would just be too sad. But now that my grandma has been there a while and I see how happy she is and how wonderful the staff is, I feel like it would be something I might want to try in my future when LO grows up.

When DH's grandmother was in hospice, I had sooo much respect for those nurses. All of them were so sweet and compassionate.
I adore elderly people. They melt my heart. I considered going into geriatrics in college but I went in the other direction. But I'm really sensitive and emotional, so I don't know if I could handle all the sadness and still do the best job I could do.

I'm a social worker in a nursing home, so it is something that I deal with on a daily basis. I work closely with hospice and the families with end of life concerns and support for the family. It is very difficult, but I always know that we have done what we can to make their last days more comfortable, and that they go to a better place.

No. Way. I'm not a big people person to begin with but working with the elderly, I couldn't handle it. I could never work in any side of the nursing or health care industry.

My MIL is a home care nurse. She basically takes care of people in their homes, living with them several days a week. It was really hard on her when her first few clients died but now she understands that it's what she's made to do and she really enjoys her work. Some people are just born that way, I guess. I would never be able to work in any kind of healthcare because I'd just fall apart any time someone was dying or died.

I'm a hospital social worker and like @babynumber1: I deal with hospice and end-of-life on a pretty regular basis. And while it can be sad, I take comfort in the fact that we're providing support and improving their quality of life. It makes it a little less difficult when you know how much you're helping them.

I saw this thread after having just posted one about my grandpa recently going on hospice. I have been in health care for over 10 years and have a passion to work in the hospice field. As of now the timing for me to go to school to be a nurse, just doesn't work. They have many other areas in hospice that you can work in that don't require much formal education, such as aides and volunteers. So I became a volunteer! Most rewarding job EVER (i'm not a mom yet). I recently had to take a break after my grandpa was put on hospice himself. I will remain in contact with my patient be available to him & his family if need be. I have 8 years experience with developmental disabilities so the majority of my patients are special needs. It can be tough at times, the gift of giving is more important than receiving.

DH's brother is a hospice nurse. I just don't have the heart. I'm so sensitive and get attached to people for no reason, really.
