I've had bronchitis for 9 days. DD is almost better from HFM and croup. It's been rough. Anyways yesterday I noticed an acute pain in a rib when I cough and sometimes breathe. I thought rib fracture from coughing was an urban legend or something. Has this happened to you or someone you know? How long did it take to heal? I have an appointment this afternoon but I can't imagine what else it could be. This is getting ridiculous.

Several winters in a row I had walking pneumonia. I had more then a few cracked ribs! It was terrible. Hope you get well soon.

This happened to me last fall! It was very irritating and I had several scans and doctor visits. I think I bruised a muscle near my lungs because it went away after a few months.

Yup! My sister had a cracked rib during pregnancy - either from coughing or puking, she wasn't sure which one.

Yeah, it does happen
but thankfully cracked ribs do get better on their own. Feel better soon!

You could also have pulled or strained a muscle while coughing.

A few years ago, I bruised a couple ribs from coughing. They weren't cracked but they still hurt like hell.

I also had a terrible cough for about eight weeks, where I bruised a couple of ribs. No broken bones but it sure felt that way. So painful. I hope you're on the mend soon, it's an awful way to be sick.

Maybe it's pleurisy? I had it a couple years ago and the pain was excruciating at times.

ribs can actually shift a little back where they connect to the spine at the facet joints. This can cause the intercostal muscles (muscles between ribs) to go into spasm. Sometime people describe pain that wraps around their sides and hurts especially with deep breathing.
The best thing you can do is continue to practice deep breathing (even if it hurts). You don't want to get pneumonia from shallow breathing. If in fact you do have a cracked rib, theres not much you can do about it. Just wait it out. ugh, I know. -

I'm so sorry - that sounds awful. I know I pulled a muscle in my ribs one time and it killed me to just breathe.

My mom did it a few years ago. The pain was quite bad but they can't do anything for it. I think it took 6-8 weeks to feel totally better?

@youboots: I got pneumonia while pregnant with DD2 and was coughing so much, I bruised my ribs. It's legit painful and I thought for sure I cracked a rib. The pain stuck around even after my pneumonia was gone! I want to say for another 5-7 days? Feel better!

Thanks for chiming in. The dr said the area that hurts has lots of cartilage so I just tweaked them. Those advice nurses get me so riled. Last week they sent us to emergency because it sounded like T had pertussis (it was croup) bless nurses, but the ones on the phone have been scaring me lately.
but thankfully cracked ribs do get better on their own. Feel better soon!
