My LO (11 weeks) has a mild case of cradle cap. I wash his hair every night with California Baby Sensitive shampoo. I brush his hair both before and after washing. It has helped a bit but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how to treat it? I read about an olive oil treatment but am reluctant to try it. I appreciate your help!

I did olive oil and rubbed it in. let it sit for a bit. Then wash and combed it.

@JoeysMama: I read that the best thing for it is frequent shampooing and it's caused by oils in the skin so not to add extra oil. My LO has a mild case too

I washed his hair every night and it faded in a week or two.

Our pedi recommended that we wash her head with a washcloth and water everyday and use shampoo 1-2x a week. It took awhile to clear but she had it pretty bad. I think it was mostly gone by month 3?

My LO had it and I just left it alone and it went away! Took about a week.

When I shampooed her hair, I would use her soft brush to massage her head. It helped loosen the flakes. Then I put lotion on her head. It went away in about a week.

Strangely enough, I've heard that using selsen blue helps. I haven't done it though so can't vouch for it myself!

@hilsy85: I heard that too. That's why I was curious to see how people treat it. I'm nervous to use it on LO but I definitely will think about it if it keeps up. It has started to bother him at night and he is scratching his head up. I know how annoying it is when your scalp itches!

Went to the ped today and she suggested putting mineral oil on 15 minutes prior to bath time. Let it sink in. Then brush and wash in bath. Haven't tried it yet.

We did a pea sized drop of selsan and scrubbed it off. Worked like a charm. DS had a pretty bad case too!

I have been brushing and washing every night and although I wish it was completely gone, it finally looks a little bit better today. My MIL told me that DH had it until he was one year old and went completely bald in the process. I guess it is in the genes!

The olive oil trick works because it softenes the hard scales and helps to "pull" them off when you then wash and comb out.
Basically most of us have oil that releases on our scalp. Craddle cap is when your skin releases more of a yeast based oil than just oil....I know this because not just babies get it. Its common most in babies but you can get it as an adult too. Which I am SUPER self con about but know first hand.But yes, more washing and combing will help as well.

A had some on her forehead too - I rub coconut oil on it and it goes in a day.

Google "borage oil and cradle cap". I'm not a doctor so I dont' know if it is true, but I've read that it helps for cradle cap (but it is hard to find). I used this Mustela product for my son when he had cradle cap: Mustela Stelaker Cradle Cap Care, I think it has a borage oil in it. That along with a cradle cap brush.

@Rescuemom10: Thanks! It must be so frustrating for you to deal with! I hate the idea of "pull"ing. I am such a wuss when it comes to this baby! It makes sense though bc the flakes are so hard.

@travelgirl1: Thank you! There was also a little in his eyebrows. That is where it seemed to bother him and itch the most. My pedi had suggested Aquaphor and that helped clear it quickly!
@podomama: I looked the borage oil up. I don't know how safe it is to use for infants but i think I will do a little more research on it. I also looked up that Mustela product. It looks great! I like how they also have lotions for baby eczema. (My poor little guy had to inherit all my skin sensitivities!) Thanks!

My favorite NICU nurse thinks baby oil is best. Apply before bath, then wash during. They also don't wash more than twice a week...even with cradle cap.

@Mrs Green Grass: Thanks so much! I actually bought the Mustela today after seeing it had so many reviews online. The baby oil would have been much cheaper, lol. Fingers crossed it works!
