I had no idea older LO's could get cradle cap, but I just noticed my 2.5 year olds head is full of it! Is it basically just from dryness? Should I try a shampoo change? We've been using Babyganics, but I'm not sure if that's been causing it or not. How can I get rid of it quickly? I know you can use baby oil, but that's just so greasy and messy...

My 3 yo has it too. I sometimes try to scrape it off while she's brushing her teeth... And I use the baby's mustela foaming cradle cap shampoo but I don't think it makes a difference. She won't sit still for me scrubbing and combing it out so I'm mostly letting it go. Choose your battles.

My 18 month old has pretty much always had some. I don't try to brush it because her ultra fine hair will fall out. It doesn't bother her so I leave it.

My toddler had it too- I changed her shampoo. I combed a lot of it out when she was getting her hair washed. She also has fine hair so some of it did come out which was alarming at the time but grew back fine. After switching shampoo and combing the flaky parts out it hasn't returned so far

We used Neutrogena's T/Gel and it took a few shampoos maybe four or five for the entire area to be completely cradle cap free. I relied on the shampoo to do the work because brushing and combing would take LO's hair out a few strands at a time with caked cradle cap.

We use the Mustella newborn shampoo for my 4 month old right from the get go and he never got it. My now 18 month old had it when she was younger and even now we still use the Mustella on her every other bath or so and it has never come back.

I've heard coconut oil and one of those rubber cradle cap brushes work well.

We have been using the Tubby Todd all over ointment and it seems to be helping. I was trying coconut oil but only like once per week and it wasn't helping.

My almost 4 year old still has it, no matter what I do.
The best thing I've been able to find for it is a Lush scalp product. I put it in, just at the root, let it sit, then comb comb comb with the tiny infant baby comb they give you in the hospital. That gets it all out for us, but it always returns.

My toddler hasn't had it, but when my baby was younger he had a pretty nasty case of it. I tried a ton of different shampoos, nothing even made a dent. Then I basically soaked the top of his head in warm water, slathered it in coconut oil and let it sit for 30 minutes or so with a hat on, then worked with a fine tooth comb to brush the pieces out. It all went away after that ONE time and has not returned. It did pull out some of his hair, but not too badly. Might give that a try!

We use the Mustela cradle cap ointment and cradle cap shampoo. The coconut oil, olive oil, baby oil routine didn't make a dent. The Mustela takes it away with one wash.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: there is a specific cradle cap formula shampoo and a regular shampoo. Only the cc one worked for us.

A friend of mine suggested Aquaphor, which was a good short term solution. Now that I think about it Aquaphor in conjunction with a CC shampoo probably would have fixed it in one shampoo.

hmm, i didn't know about those brushes either! I notice my son gets it sometimes and we'll scrub his head really well when shampooing, then I'll come his hair wet with a fine tooth comb going in the opposite direction and it gets a ton of the flakes out.

Those brushes rip out the hair. They aren't that effective in getting rid of the cradle cap. I use Head & Shoulders (peds recommended) on my 15 month old because he had it pretty bad. He's only got a small spot of it now.

@oliviaoblivia: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I think you are talking about the Stelakker one (Or something like that)- I couldn't find it online or in stores when my baby had CC a few months back. I used the foam shampoo for cc but it's definitely milder than the big guns one.
@smocks: That's pretty much how I got rid of it for my baby. But there is no way I could get my 3 year old to sit still for that, unless she was like, really sick, medicated, and parking in front of Frozen.

my 15 month old has it still. We massage in coconut oil into her scalp at the beginning of every bath (every other day or so) was it with California Baby unscented shampoo, then I use Young Living conditioner on her hair after to moisturize.

One other thing to do (aside from switching shampoos and combing it out) is to be sure you're rinsing thoroughly with clean water rather than the soapy bath water.
