I am not too much help in re-assuring, but I really have to tell ya, kids adapt SO well, and it seems he will be well taken care of!

The first time I had ever been away from DD1 was when I gave birth to DD2; she was newly 2. Grandma picked her up after school which was normal procedure; grandparents stayed with her through dinner and put her to bed, which was new (I think), but she was fine! Helped that she was at home. Then I sent DH home around mid-night after delivery so he could wake up with her and give her as normal of a routine as possible. So I was away from her for 2 nights.

With DD2, she is 2.5 and I have never been away from her overnight yet.

@Sams Mom: My daughter was just under a year when I first left her overnight. I was halfway across the country on a work trip for 3 nights. It ended up being AWFUL because she had an ear infection that wasn't getting better with antibiotics, so she had to get Rocephin shots. She was miserable and screaming the whole time I was gone and I felt so guilty. But don't let my bad story stop you! I've been gone a few times since then (she is now 3), and she's been just fine.

My oldest was 3.5 when she went to my parent's house by herself (many states away). My mom came to pick her up, she was there for 5 days, and then I flew to pick her up. I'll be honest, it was a rough few days. She had a lot of fun, but also had a lot of feelings. But now she does it annually (this year will be her 4th year), and this year she wanted to do two weeks on her own with Gramma and Grandpa. That wasn't logistically feasible, but she's getting a week plus. However, last year she also did a solo trip with my husband's parents and it didn't go as well. She did not ask to repeat it this year! I think part of the problem is that my husband's step mom has incredible unrealistic expectations for the behavior of young children.

Both kids have gone cross country with my husband without me to visit his parents. I find the time alone rejuvenating, and am so excited to see them when they get back!

I feel like the younger the better because then they’re used to it. I’ve spent quite a bit of time away for both work and pleasure and it has gotten so much easier. At this point I just make sure they have toothbrushes and clothes, and that whomever is watching them knows their typical bedtime. If whomever is watching them does their hair before dropping them at school or wherever, that’s just a bonus. Usually if I’m leaving for work it’s my husband home with them, but they’ve both spent several nights in a row at grandparents houses and been completely fine (and they sleep better too because I’m not there to coddle them!). DD2 was only 5 months old when we went out of town for 3 nights in a row and our girls stayed with their grandparents.

The first time I was gone overnight was for work (two nights, about 4 hours away) when my daughter was 8-ish months old. DH and I were very comfortable with leaving her alone overnight with each other, but we were both nervous leaving her along with her aunt for our first overnight trip away from her together (around 16 months). But it was fine and she loved it. Good luck! I know it's hard, but it will be fine!

I travel a lot for work, so this is the norm for us. The first time I left them alone DS was seven months. I have a four month window where I'm pretty much gone eight of 12 weekends.

It was hard at first but we all got used to it. DS is three now, and while my traveling is getting easier on DH (fewer wake ups, etc.) it's harder on DS because he realizes I'm gone.

I have been away from DD and DH approx. 1x per year for 4-5 days since she was 6 months old (she is 4). DH is a very equal coparent and more than capable. He and DD have a fantastic bond and I get excited for them to do special things when I am gone.

Sure, I get nervous about some things but that is my personality and not his capabilities. If it were me, I'd tell DH that I am nervous and it would help to know he is committed to XYZ. For me, DH knows DD must wear her life jacket when fishing from shore and cannot have marshmellows. Silly things like his commitment to that help me calm down.

I'm away from my LO's a lot because of work travel so my husband is used to solo parenting! But, he took our LO to Virginia when she was 4. They both did great - stayed with his sister's family. Here's the thing about going away with just Dad - you get some peace and quiet and you get the knowledge that Dad will be with him. If there is anyone who knows him as well as you do, it's dad. If it was Grandma or someone else, I'd worry more but away with Dad is awesome!

@Sams Mom: I also was nervous but it was AWESOME when my DH took my son away! He's done it like 5xs starting when he was 2yo. Looking back, I wish I had done it so much more. It's such good memories for your son, think of it like that. And they always do better than you think.
It's also really good to have a break from your family to have some alone time for yourself!
Now I have 2 kids and I would pay $239328399823 for someone (I really trust) to take them for the night and give me a break

@Sams Mom: My wife took our son to visit her family for 7 days and 7 nights when he was 18 months old. I missed them but it was also glorious. Hahahha.

While I am normally the primary caregiver, DH has DS on his own when I have to travel for work. First time I think was around 9 months. Inevitably he gets sick or something when I'm gone (he's just been sick a ton first winter in daycare), but DH handles fine. He does miss me and apparently will say mama mama mama over and over, which is a little sad, but I think it's actually good for him to every now and then have a bit of diversity and learn that mama can be away for an evening and come back. I still bf him, so I'm sure that is part of missing mama.

If My husband took the kids to another state for four days I would:

-go eat wherever I wanted to
-go get a pedicure or even better a massage
-clean the house and enjoy a clean house without it being messed up two seconds later
-oooh or even go watch a movie
Possibilities are endless.

I think they’ll be fine. My biggest worry when I go out of town and leave my kids is (once a year for work conference)
-their food schedule. Husband can’t cook anything. But since grandma is there, you know he’s gonna get fed well

My second biggest worry is that I’ll be coming to a crazy messy house that you have to clean up after a long work thing. But this doesn’t apply here so you got the best of both worlds! Enjoy it!

@Sams Mom: my only advice is to enjoy it! I don't think my DH has ever had the kids overnight by himself, but there have been a few instances where the kids will go visit my mom for the week (like spring break) and DH is gone travelling for work. It is glorious. I clean my house on one day and it actually stays clean the entire week. The mental break is amazing. I don't have to remember schedules, who needs cold lunch/hot lunch money. I don't have to listen to anyone complain about what is for dinner. Not having to rush out of the house for school drop off, daycare drop off or rush out of work to do pick up is a nice break.

@Sams Mom: I have been where you are, but since my husband had to start taking some time on his own, things are much better around here and I would never go back. Enjoy!
