We don't have cable right now, but Dish is offering something called Sling TV... My understanding is that it's live TV but you stream it through your internet through some sort of device (roku, PS3, etc) I think their basic package has 20 channels including ESPN, TNT, Food Network, and more... My DH is interested in it for sports and what not. We have an antenna otherwise for the basic network channels. You can add on other packages for an additional $5 to get more channels.

We also finally changed our provider/got rid of cable because the intro rates that we had more than doubled. We don't have cable any more, just Netflix...it works for us because we literally don't watch TV outside of old episodes of Handy Manny and The Blacklist. Oh, and I might start watching old eps of Mad Men, lol.

For our cable, I called them and told them I wanted to downgrade to the most basic package because I had Amazon Prime and could watch most of my cable shows there. So the woman dropped my price $50 and let me keep my 2nd tier channels.

We cut the cable cord close to a year ago. We have Hulu and Netflix, and an antennae. Hulu gives us almost every one of our tv shows, and the antennae allows DH to watch sports every so often. We've always been too busy for him to sit around watching ESPN much.

The only shows we don't get and miss are from CBS, like Big Bang Theory. They have an app that you can pay like $5/month for, but DH really hates paying for broadcast tv shows. I guess we could watch it with the antennae, but we're never on the ball enough for that. The other shows we can't get on Hulu, we end up paying for. So in the past year we've paid for Downton Abbey and Walking Dead. We save so much on not having cable that I don't mind spending the money on those shows. Plus, then you don't have any commercials.

We use an apple tv, so all of our Hulu, Netflix and paid for (through iTunes) shows go through that. Easy peasy.

@blackbird: The only sport we watch is UFC, and you have to pay for the big fights anyway.

@blackbird: Haha, we're not sports people so that's not really an issue for us. I do know that our neighbors in England used to watch the games streaming online and they'd hook their laptop to their TV. Im not sure what website they used or what, but they did it. But yeah, Charter is the far superior ISP. AT&T is much more expensive for slower service. Charter has increased our speed for free twice in the last year. From 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 100. Granted, we normally get closer to 60 but we do get near 100 sometimes.

@blackbird: on Sling TV it just comes through exactly like you're watching cable. Except weirdly, some of the stations' commercials don't come through and they just show a "we'll be right back" screen during commercial breaks. I don't think you can DVR anything but we've only had it a couple weeks and I haven't played around with it that much.

Hmmm, this Sling is the first time I'm hearing of it and I'm very intrigued. The only reason I can't get DH to cut the cord is sports, but if he can have ESPN and we get a digital antenna for local events, I bet I can convince him to save 60+ dollars a month!
