Dad pulls gun, constable kills girl

This is just tragic.
It's really hard for me to understand why the dad would do this, although for those with guns in the house I imagine at some point they are prepared to "defend" themselves in front of their children.

I'm so sick of guns. The innocent get killed more often than the bad guys, and this needs to stop.

A 14 year old boy was shot and killed by his father who mistook him for an intruder, I read about it within an hour of seeing this article. So so awful.

@sorrycharlie: I read that story as well. So tragic. How on earth could you ever shoot without even seeing the person, particularly if you don't live alone? Ugh.

I don't understand why the dad would pull a gun but I also don't understand why the officer would shoot? In fact, I don't understand why either of these people had a bloody gun in the first place. Its all just out of control.

@sorrycharlie: not too long on the other side of my state a mom killed her daughter because she thought she was an intruder. The daughter was 27, not a child, but still a child- her own child.
I see why doctor's ask if there are guns in the house. Hopefully, if people say yes the doctor doesn't preach remove the gun first because that tunes people out. Having a discussion on responsible use is a must. For a couple months in college I lived with a family friend and he always told me to make noise (like say a greeting loudly) whenever I came in no matter the time. That way he would know it's me and not an intruder.

@mrbee: yeah, it didn't last long. As soon I was able to sort out housing I moved. That was so crazy to me! Thankfully, I never saw a gun.

@2littlepumpkins: Yes, you're probably right. It was just my gut reaction. You must remember how different the culture is here. Our Police Officers don't carry guns. We do have specialist armed units who can be called in to certain situations but before a shot can be deployed, the officer must obtain authorisation from a senior officer. If a shot is fired (even if nobody is hit), there is an immediate independent inquiry into whether it was the right decision. In a year, shots fired by officers in the UK is routinely in single figures. Reasonable force is big here and in this situation the officer a) wouldn't be armed and b) would have been expected to talk the guy down and retreat calmly.

@2littlepumpkins: @Cherrybee: The article says that the father pulled a gun on the constable first, then the constable immediately got his gun out and shot.
This makes me sick. It's so sad. I just don't understand guns at all. Even if the constable were an intruder or something, I don't understand why anyone would shoot anyone with their young daughter right there to see it.

@Cherrybee: Yes I was writing a more detailed answer but the gist of it is there's definitely a cultural difference here. I don't know what that dad was thinking.

@2littlepumpkins: 100% agreed. I actually evict people as part of my job. I've evicted over 100 households during my career and served probably 1000 odd notices. I've never, ever experienced anything remotely like this. WTF??

@Cherrybee: @2littlepumpkins: from the constable's perspective I don't fault him from firing his gun. He shot to wound the man threatening his life based on where the article says the rifle was pointed.

@Cherrybee: I don't think the police in the US can adopt those sorts of policies while a significant portion of citizens are carrying guns as well. I agree that culture is one reason for the differing approaches, but I think a lot of it has to do with US gun laws too!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Nor do I! I actually feel really bad for the constable that he had to make that choice and it had this tragic outcome.
