Our daycare provider’s husband just got over Covid. He started to feel ill on Jan. 2-3, and his 10 days of quarantine were finished this past Wednesday. Our provider never got Covid, and tested negative (twice). She was told she could open back up tomorrow (1/19). She is very responsible and I trust that she is following recommendations she was given by the health department, but it still worries me to send them back so soon. Anyone have any experience with this? We are considering keeping them home all week, or at the earliest sending them back Thursday. It’s pretty difficult for us to make the end of this week work though, so if I’m being crazy I’m happy to send them back Thursday.

I would need more info. before sending the kids back, since it's a 14 day quarantine from exposure... so if it's been 14 days since her last exposure to him, then it should be fine, but I know its super hard to do that living in the same house.

@LemonJack: @josina: In our NJ schools they’ve taken it down to 10 day quarantine for non-symptomatic exposure (which seems short after being told 14 days for so long, but I’m choosing to trust that scientific research went into this decision). So it sounds like the provider is playing by whatever rules she was given. However; I guess I would worry that the provider so I could have been exposed to her husband while he was contagious at a later date then the day when he was first diagnosed, if that makes sense.
I would probably keep my kids home as long as I could conveniently do so up to the 14 day mark. If Thursday is going to be near impossible for you with them home, I think I would send them back and just take whatever extra precautions I could (dependent on the kids ages) with masks, not being all cuddly with the provider, and extra handwashing.
For context of where I fall on the paranoia scale
, my kids are 4, 6, and 8 and attend school (shortened hours in masks/with partitions,, recently upped to the full class size rather than cohorts) plus dance/acro in small socially distanced settings with masks and open doors). We chose to voluntarily go virtual for school and activities the first week back from Christmas/New Year’s break out of concern that others would not follow quarantine requirements after travel/large gatherings.

Hmmm. When my dad got Covid, my mom was instructed to quarantine for 10 days past his 10 days (or date of release if he’d had severe symptoms). And in fact, she was nearly 10 days into his illness before she tested positive (and she had tested negative 5 or 6 days into his illness). So if it isn’t impossible, I’d keep them home.

@Jess1483: I second this. My brother and his live-in fiancee had a similar timeline. He got symptoms December 28th, tested positive on 1/5, and his fiancee was fine and tested negative twice and got her first symptoms on 1/12 and tested positive a couple days later.

According to our county health dept’s guidelines, her quarantine period wouldn’t begin until after her husband’s isolation period had ended. So if he got sick Jan 2, her quarantine period would start Jan 12. The only math here that is making sense to me is that the newest CDC guildelines say you can end your quarantine period after 7 days, as long as you had a negative test day 5 or later. That *should* catch the majority of cases but it obviously isn’t foolproof.
Fwiw, I’d keep my kids home as long as I could until after a full 14 day quarantine from her (so send them back the 26th). But I wouldn’t send them back any sooner than a 10 day quarantine (which would mean keeping them home until the 22–at which point I’d figure I may as well wait until Monday the 25 🤷♀️)

What some of you are describing is exactly what I’m afraid of. I’m afraid she tested negative twice, but based on the timeframe, could still develop symptoms.
It’s a short week for me, so we planned to keep them home and have my DH cover a couple of mornings while I was at work. I can work from home in the afternoon this week. But, some things came up in his job, so in order to keep them home Thursday I may need to take the day off. I have a hard time doing that (I’m a teacher and my team already really had to cover for me while our kids were home the last two weeks), but I also hate to imagine having to do this for another few weeks if they were exposed.
