@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'm not in favor of the death penalty but in this particular situation I dont feel sorry for the rapists at all. Their attack on her was horrible and I dont know why one of them was crying when the sentenced was announced. These kind of attacks have been on the rise in india and surrounding countries so maybe a harsher sentence is what it takes to stop this from becoming the norm

I don't think the death penalty is too severe for some crimes (although I don't support the death penalty in the US because of the many known flaws in our justice system), but most, if not all, data shows the death penalty is not a crime deterrent.
I definitely don't think one case will deter violence against women, in India or elsewhere - especially not in the countries where rape is rarely prosecuted in the first place, and where violence against women is accepted on a social, religious and legal basis.

I agree that it would be unusual for someone to get the death penalty for a rape! I think in this case, they were sentenced as much for her murder as for the gang rape...

I don't feel it's too severe at all. They brutally raped and murdered her. There were many witnesses.
Will it deter future violence against women? Probably not much.

It's not too severe--they raped and murdered her. This outrage from this case did not deter rapists as we have seen there have been numerous reports of more gang rapes in India since this. I don't think the death penalty will dissuade rapists.

Unfortunately, all of the evidence shows that the death penalty isn't a deterrent to future crimes. If anything the notoriety usually leads to copycat crimes. I think it is far harsher to keep someone in prison without any chance of parole than to kill them and end their misery.
I'm anti-death penalty due to the data,but what these men did was horrific.

@Mrs. Jacks: I couldn't have said it better myself. It won't act as a deterrent and it won't bring her back. It offers limited opportunity for reflection and remorse, or, and this might be going too far, rehabilitation and education. What those men did was beyond terrible, but they are a product of the society in which they grew up. They thought they would get away with it and now they're being offered a degree of notoriety and martyrdom for others who think of women as disposable.
I don't think it's helpful at all and it doesn't fit with how the Indian justice system usually works (as I understand it). I feel like it's all for the cameras.

@Mrs. Jacks: Agreed. I'd rather have them suffer in prison for the rest of their pathetic lives. I don't know if this will act as a deterrent, but sentencing these men for such a horrific act is at least a step in the right direction for India.
