Clomid can make your ovulation "stronger". I would ask the doctor for an opinion on why he/she thinks Clomid will help you. I used Clomid for an IUI cycle because I did not ovulate on my own.

well i didn't ovulate on my own, so clomid was the first step for us (unfortunately we had to add other meds later on.)

if you're ovulating on your own could you do a few monitored cycles and maybe an iui?

I didn't take any meds without monitoring because I wanted to be confident they were doing something, and that our risk of h.o. multiples wasn't great. So we waited until after a year, partly because my mom told me it took about a year for her to get pg with me, and partly bc as anxious as we were, we just weren't ready for that much intervention before a year.

Personally, I wouldn't do an unmonitored Clomid cycle. Back when I was first having trouble, of course that's exactly what I wanted - someone to just give me an rx for it and send me on my way. But it was so useful having the monitoring. But then, I didn't ovulate without it, so it's a little bit of a different story.

But with the monitoring they can tell you how many follicles, what size, etc. You'll also know better when you're going to ovulate, as opposed to trying to interpret OPKs. You could also do what I did, and do an ovulation trigger injection, which was awesome. I couldn't even feel it go in, and it makes you ovulate all mature follicles within 48 hours. So timing BD-ing was incredibly easy.

I went off the pill, and never got a period. Then I did two rounds of progesterone to try to kickstart my cycle, but after each one I still didn't go back to normal cycling. I also had a family history of infertility after age 30, and I was 26 at this point. My doctor suggested at that point (about 4 months after we'd started trying to conceive and get my period straightened out) that I consider clomid. I did, it worked, and I conceived on my fourth round.

I'm very glad that I didn't wait. I had no intention of messing around for a year when I already had irregular periods, already had a family history. Clomid was not wonderful, but it wasn't terrible. And it got me my beautiful daughter. We've been NTNP now unsuccessfully for the past year, so it seems pretty clear that I just need help with my fertility in general.

If you don't want to wait, I wouldn't. You can certainly find a doctor who will support your timeline. There is very little benefit to 'being patient', in my opinion. Clomid has only minor side effects, the chance of twins aside. Had I been past 30 I would have had even fewer qualms.

About monitoring - all my cycles were unmonitored. I had progesterone testing CD21 to confirm ovulation, but that was it. I felt comfortable with that. I personally think that unmonitored clomid cycling for the first three cycles is ideal, but that's my comfort level.

We decided to give clomid a try after my gyn referred me to an RE, who diagnosed me with PCOS.
