I found that things on the wall really finishes up a room. I have a guest bedroom where I took dollar store frames and just framed really pretty patterened scrapbook paper sheets (different but coordinating patterns) and it look super cute without being too cutesy.

We just moved and while we have "stuff" the house is no where from being done. We're pretty far away from putting stuff up on the walls, we have some things, but I am really looking for more intentional decorations this time around.

I think window treatments make the room. We have roman shades in two of the bedrooms and it makes a ton of difference. The rest of the windows are bare though, we need to kind of get on that, but my husband would say that's the least important part of the entire house.

Also, plants add some color and if you get the easy to take care of ones, don't require much maintenance.

Paint did wonders for our house when we moved in, and is an inexpensive fix. We also made a stop at IKEA and picked up a ton of their cheapy picture frames and put up a gallery wall for <20$. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, check out their art clearance - I just furnished my new office for under 40$!

Like others mentioned paint can make a big difference! Also, thrift stores will sometimes have some pretty good finds. I like estate sales, when we were first married we stumbled upon an art collector's estate sale and got some beautiful art pieces that were super budget friendly. For my picture gallery wall I purchased frames at Michaels and used coupons. Fabric.com is my favorite place to purchase fabric for window treatments and since I don't sew I simply use some hem tape and put them up--super easy.

Paint, cheap fabric like others have said for new curtains, & using what you have for decorations. I have tons of stuff that I have collected over the years & sometimes finding the right way to display it or even painting it can bring it back out. I have ugly blue & brown candle holders I plan to paint silver.

@aprk: I want to second your recommendation for paint! It really can transform a room.

Oh, and with paint, you can do a decorative treatment, like a horizontal stripe all around the room, paint the ceiling a different color, etc.

@highwire: You can always use different kinds of finishing pieces to create frames (3/4" round, crown molding, etc., and then make a wall arrangement with them.
