LO has pneumonia and can't go to daycare for a bit. DH's schedule is a little weird this week and he doesn't work until Saturday so he is watching her.
My MIL found out about this and yelled at us...."DH is not the mother, you need to step up and take care of your child." Sooo annoying. DH told her he is capable of taking care of LO and we left soon after that.

Whoa. Totally unacceptable. I'd be so completely livid at that. I fully expect my DH to take care of LO when I can't, and that doesn't make me (or you) any less of a mother.

Um... he's still a parent. That really bothers me. I hate these ingrained gender roles that so many people still have.
Either parent can parent their child - the gender makes no difference.
To me this is just like when people say things like "Oh, is Daddy babysitting?" No. He's parenting. It's not called babysitting when it's your own child.
I would be pissed.

Um, what. I would not have responded calmly to my MIL telling me to "step up and be the mother". DH is E's father, yes? So he is very much allowed to take care of her. Why on Earth would you both stay home, when DH is already at home and capable?
Ooohh, that just annoyed me and i'm not even in your shoes lol!

Wow, that is really annoying. The weirdest part is it's not your mother saying this, it's his! So she's basically saying her son is incapable of taking care of his child alone.

@meredithNYC: He was pretty calm and apologized to me about it when we got in our car. He knew I was already feeling bad about LO being sick and didn't want his mom to upset me even further. He didn't really take offense to it....he knows his mom is old fashioned and it rolls off his back.

YES! I can't stand that! Babysitting is what an aunt or uncle or grandparent does. Parenting is what a mother or father does. Yes, I'll be the primary caregiver since I will be a SAHM, but the times when he is alone with LO, it will just be father-child time, not babysitting.
@autumnlove: How annoying! It's good that your DH didn't take that attitude to heart growing up and doesn't see it that way, even if his mom does.

Holy moly. I would have been really upset if my MIL said this about my husband. Sure he doesn't have magical boobs, but that's what bottles are for! Daddy's are just as good as Mommy. Sometimes Mommy has to work!!!

Holy cow dude!! It's just temporary, sheesh! Even if he was the SAHD, what's wrong with that?! Times have changed, and women are just as accomplished as men. Hubby has already called dibs on being a SAHD for when we have kids. When I told him he had the opportunity to be a SAHH(husband) for awhile so now I want to be a SAHM when the time comes, and he said no. He's going to be the SAH parent. LOL!!!

yikes. i would be pissed and my husband would be even more pissed. i think it's so weird when i hear people say: oh, dad is babysitting today! um, isn't it YOUR child?!

@Arden: Yes, exactly this. I despise hearing about fathers 'babysitting'. My husband does not baby sit, he parents. He'd be exactly as capable of taking care of our baby when she's sick as I would. I'm lucky to have a family that knows that and that doesn't buy into bs outdated gender roles.
