One of the things I'm so curious about is how much baby will weigh at birth! Last week 25.5 weeks, our u/s tech said Baby Shopaholic weighed 1lb 13 oz. I've been trying to figure how much this might become by birth? And wondering if the weight they tell you they think baby will be based on your last few Dr. visits were accurate or not? Anyone care to share their experiences?

Yup! both times.
Mavrick they said about 8.5 lbs if I gave birth on time, and he was 9lbs 1 week late.
Sienna they said, 7.5-8 and she was 7.14oz -
Yep. My ob estimated a little more than 5lbs and she came out a week later (full term) at 5lb5oz.

They thought E would be right around 7lbs, he was 8lb 12oz

Nope! At around 39 weeks OB said DD was well over 8 lbs. she wasn't born until 41w3days and was 7 lbs 13 oz! Good thing she stayed cooking a little while longer!

@shopaholic: Nah, they didn't guesstimate for me until 38-39 weeks, and then I really just think they pulled a number out of their butts since I didn't have an U/S past 22 weeks. Well except for the admitting OB at L&D...he did a quick U/S when I was admitted and guessed around 7lbs, but it was a super quick non-thorough U/S to check on head position...I was in too much agony for anything longer.

Not for me, but my moms doctor estimated her last two children to be 8-9 lbs! But both were her smallest babies, both less than 7 lbs! She was a little peeved because they kept pushing her to get an induction and she kept resisting. Turned out to not be a big deal at all

It seems like they all guess OVER rather than under huh? I guess they'd rather you be prepared for a watermelon instead of a cantaloupe! lol!

No answer yet, but at our 32 week appt they guessed 3lbs 9 oz, and we go in tomorrow for our 36 week growth appt tomorrow. I'm so curious to see what they guess! My diabetes nurse told me that she'll probably put on another 1 1/2 pounds over the next 3 weeks, so that will give me some idea what to expect.

)Nope, they said she'd be 8.5-9 lb at 40 weeks (closer to 9 and would be gaining around half a pound a week. She was 8 lb 5 oz at 40 weeks, 4 days.

Nope. I had an ultrasound specifically to estimate baby's size at 40 weeks 2 days, and they estimated she would be 9 lbs 8 oz. She was born 5 days later at 8 lbs 5 oz.

@shopaholic -i had an U/S done at 39 wks. I think bc i am on the smaller side, my ob just wanted to make sure the baby was ok. He would never tell me what he thought my baby would weight at earlier visits.

No personal experience, but I had a friend who they induced because they estimated her baby to be over 9 lbs. He was 7 lbs. and a few ounces.

I sure hope my estimates are over. I'm 40 weeks now and 2 weeks ago, my midwife estimated LO was 8.5 lbs. I had ultrasounds throughout the third trimester and the estimates all followed the same trajectory! I'm terrified that this baby is going to be huge because I am a tiny person so I always expected her to be on the small side.

Hmmm, my Dr. did measurements but never gave me specific numbers beyond saying things looked normal. He doesn't believe in estimates because he says they are usually off. I have a different OB this time so I hope I get measurements.

At 33 weeks they estimated she already weighed 6.25lbs, putting her close to 9.75 at birth. DH and I were both over 9 so it's possible they are right. My poor poor vag.

At 40 weeks, 2 days they estimated het at 8 lb 2 oz and she was born two days later at 7lb 10 oz. So another overestimation here

@shopaholic: Over estimation happens CONSTANTLY, which is why it's often a bad idea to induce based on the baby's size.
They tell you you're having a 9.5 pounder so you'd best induce now, and then you have a 6 pound baby and all that was for nothing.

Also - to all you ladies who are scared of what a big baby will to do you? I was at a birth where the baby was 10.6, and she didn't even tear. At all.
You never know. lol

My doctor doesn't do weight guesses, but they do percentile range if you have an US at the end. They said my LO was in the 55% range, so just over average. I was assuming he'd be closer to 8lbs, but at 39 weeks, he was only 6 lbs 9 oz. if I had gone until 40 weeks, he'd probably have just made it over 7 lbs.

Ours was correct based on u/s that same day, but I've noticed lots of variation in u/s machines.

Mine was correct. Had an u/s at 36 weeks and ob said baby was around 6lbs and would gain 1/2 pound a week. Lo was 8lb 1 ounce

They were pretty accurate. I measured big so they made me get an ultrasound in my third trimester and I don't remember exactly, but I remember them saying shed be big but not so big I'd need a section. She was 8 lb 13 oz.

They were only an ounce off.

We had an ultrasound around 36W4D and she measured at 40 weeks and 8lbs 13 ounces.
She was born at 39W6D and was 9lbs 7 ounces

Tearing is totally the head. Not necessarily weight! My LO was 7lb 10 oz and I tore badly, she has a big head and flew out!
They estimated her at 30 weeks to be 3 lbs 3 oz, and at 35w to be around 6...they estimated shed be 8 at birth so not terribly off..

At 36 weeks they said he was 6lb 9 oz and expected to gain 0.5 lbs week. So a total of 8lb 9 oz. will let you know next week

I was told at 32 weeks he would be between 7 and 7.5 lbs. He was 7lbs 11oz so pretty close!

Pretty darn close. They estimated a little under 7. She was 7lbs 4oz and a week late. I would rather them overestimate than under. A friend of mine was told her second would be about 7.5lbs and he was 10.5lbs at birth. Surprise!

I had a fetal survey at 30 weeks and he was like 3 lbs 2 oz then....was born at 38 weeks at only 5 lbs 5 oz. They knew all along he'd be small.

Not even close for weight, but we all knew he would be tall. At 36 weeks he dropped and my measurements were off with the doc, so he ordered an US. They were estimating the baby to be 9-10 lbs at 40 weeks... He was 6.11 at 39.1, but was 21 inches long. Whew!
