Lovely, and totally normal, name! And fwiw, my grandma always called me a slightly different name (Ann instead of Anna) and I grew up just knowing gma was crazy, it wasn't confusing lol

We know a (grown up) Genevieve and she goes by Genny. I think it's a lovely name.

I love the name Genevieve - I have known several people with that name.

Honestly, I am not surprised people are having issues with the spelling, since it's not super common, there are lots of vowels, and, well, sometimes people just have issues with spelling names But I think it's lovely; they will get used to it!

Beautiful name! People have had more difficulty than I expected with Liam! You (or they) get used to it. I think you did well naming your daughter.

Beautiful name. People misspell names all the time, I wouldn't change her name based on other people.

hehe I've known a few Genevieve's -- pronounced both the French and English way... I think that should be the only 'confusion' and easily rectified!

I am sure your family will get the hang of it soon

@Skadi: it's a lovely name a people will get used to it. My name is Fabienne people pronounce it wrong from the spelling because it is French but once hearing it pronounced Fa-byen, they get used to it.

My name was on the top 20 list in the 80's ), and people mess it up! I'm talking very very simple name. It may be Brittany, Caroline, Kelly, Kristin, Ashley, Maria, Tara, Cassandra, Alicia. One of those is my name, and it's probably the most simple one (okay I'll narrow it down and it's not Cassandra, Maria, or Alicia!), and people mis-pronounce my name pretty often. I just can't even begin to fatham how!?!? So, it doesn't matter what you name your children. Someone somehow someway will still butcher it! I love your daughter's name!

I've totally heard this name before and I would know exactly how to pronounce it.

If if makes you feel any better, i have a somewhat uncommon name that is said EXACTLY how it is spelled. There should be no confusion around it. But people get it wrong every single day. This stuff just cant be helped sometimes.

@Fronkinzankinsbride That's terrible! Our last name is only one syllable, but it's Germanic and no one seems to pronounce the vowel correctly. Sometimes people mispronounce even after they've been corrected! My DH had to write a note next to his name when they called him up on stage for graduation that said, "Rhymes with ______."

I feel a lot better after reading so many of these responses. Especially hearing about really common names still being mispelled or mispronounced! It sounds like it's unavoidable with some people.

@Skadi: GORGEOUS name! I love it. that's the only way I would pronounce it, and it's not an uncommon name - very classic and sophisticated. I think it's bizarre your family doesn't know how to pronounce it. Very strange...

@Fronkinzankinsbride: sheesh I hate that when people are like, "I'll never learn that... let me call you something else." um no, not okay.

When I read your daughters name in your post, I read it how you pronounce it. It's really not that difficult, and I think it's a beautiful name!

If it makes you feel any better, I have a super common and easy first name from the 80's and I get someone pronouncing it wrong at least once per week.

I've loved that name ever since Genevieve from Trading Spaces or whatever that show was called. I will admit though it's one of many names I have a harder time spelling- I mean literally I have probably never typed Michael without having to backspace (had to that time... Mia always instead of MIC... etc) I'm not great with words with a lot of letters/vowels especially if not all letters are being pronounced. I consider that a more personal to ME issue and would never judge a name on that.

ETA- "in summary" not a mistake, BEAUTIFUL name, and you shouldn't worry any further about it!

I'm guessing people (especially family) will get used to it.

My brother had that issue when they named their daughter Maire (not Marie, but the irish form of Mary, Pronounced like Maura).

Even my SIL over enunciated when she was first born and she became Moy-rah, but she's 6 now and it's fine.

It's a lovely name and I think it's fabulous! People can be so dumb. My husband's name is not even that uncommon and it's misspelled constantly.

I have a SUPER common first name, and people spell it differently all the time. It has never bothered me - I just correct them and move on. Her name is beautiful, don't let people make you feel like you made a bad decision!

It's a gorgeous name, and people will get used to it! I went to school with a Genevieve (still FB friends with her) and she often goes by Gen.

But I really don't think it's an out there name AT ALL!

I agree. It is a gorgeous name. Unique, in that she won't have 10 other girls with the same name in her class, but not at all out there. I didn't even know there were other pronunciations of it.

As someone who has a first AND last name that people have butchered my whole life, either in spelling or pronunciation I actually liked that I had a name that was a little different. I just got used to spelling or correcting their pronunciation for people. I am also much more cognizant of making sure i get it right for others.

Don't let anyone make you feel like you made a bad decision. It is her name, they will learn it.

It's a gorgeous, normal name! People will misspell/mispronounce anything. Don't feel bad.
