I was just baking a cake for DH's birthday and being the glutton that I am, I forgot I should not eat raw eggs and was licking up loads of chocolate batter! I'm so angry at myself! I hope I didn't just put my baby in danger

I'm sure you are fine!
I drank in Vegas before I knew I was pregnant.

I had TWO separate CT scans so that my doctor could tell me that she had no clue what was wrong with me. I'm still angry about it.

@autumnlove: Me too! I was in Vegas the week I was supposed to get my period, and saw some light spotting so I thought I was in the clear. Lots of hot tubs and lots of drinking
@Glitter: I broke all the rules (besides drinking - once I knew I was pregnant!). Coffee, sushi, lunch meat, soft serve, potato/tuna salad, raw batter, sleeping on my back... Everything in moderation of course.

Dude, I've eaten a metric crapton of brownie mix and cookie dough.
You'll be fine (though I totally support the "to each their own" mentality with what is "ok" during pregnancy)! With that being said, I've been firmly planted in the "little bit of everything" camp and have had subs/deli meat, medium steaks, softserve...the list goes on! My biggest mistake has probably been not drinking enough water most days...
grapefruit / 4213 posts
I was eating chicken salad multiple times every week... until one day I happened to realize that was supposedly on the no-no list. Oops.
papaya / 10343 posts
@swurlygurl: wait you're not supposed to sleep on your stomach? that's the only way i can sleep!!
I guess my biggest "mistake" although it's just a choice is that I'm not giving up my coffee. I know lots of people are in the no caffeine camp, but my doc said my morning cup is okay so I'm going with that. For mine and everyone's sake.
papaya / 10343 posts
@swurlygurl: ah. i wind up that way sometimes (can't really do anything about it since i toss and turn so much). but usually it is uncomfy anyways so i spend most of my time on my stomach
honeydew / 7091 posts
@Mae: Yeah, that was my problem, I tried to avoid it when possible. DH would even wake me up to tell me to roll over, he was obsessed with that rule

@swurlygurl: what's the danger in sleeping on your back? I feel like I'm squeezing the baby when I sleep on my stomach.

@ms.janedoe: oh yes I never ever meet my goal of 10 glasses of water.

I took a bunch of medication (sick with the flu and with crazy infections) before knowing I was pregnant. I cried when I found out I was pregnant, I was so worried I put my baby in danger. It turned out fine though.
honeydew / 7091 posts
@Glitter: I might get this a little wrong, but from what I understood, you can squish the nerve/vein/cord/something that feeds your baby/gives blood to your baby/something when you lay on your back because of the extra weight of your belly. Being a little overweight already, I was especially sensitive to that happening. That was the rule I tried to follow the most.

It wasn't a mistake but a choice- I went in a hot spring! I stayed in the coolest area and only for a few minutes, but I was in Alaska at a natural hot spring. I couldn't NOT go in. But I was paranoid and only stayed for a few minutes with my body half out.
I also ate a bite of raw cake batter before catching myself. After that I would add all the ingredients besides the egg, have some tastes, then add the egg. How's that for gluttonous?
papaya / 10343 posts
I haven't baked yet but I know that will be hard for me too! One hard thing (which I've not bent on) is not sampling pepperoni when I make a pizza. I usually make the pizza and eat a few cold pepperoni pieces while assembling. But I know I shouldn't eat them until they are all cooked... so I haven't. But ugh. want.
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@Glitter: my OB said that sleeping on your back is dangerous for you but that your body will wake you up before damage is done. I sleep on my back at 34 weeks with no problem.

@swurlygurl: I'm a back sleeper too! By habit, I always revert to my back in my sleep.
persimmon / 1281 posts
@Foodnerd81: ahhaha that is terrible. Tbh though after I realized I put just a little more on my tongue, let it sit for a while then washed out my mouth. Wish I had thought of your trick!
@Mae: u just got me cravingggg pepperoni pizza!
@swurlygurl: wow I never heard of this. Thanks for the info! I'll be careful with that.
@ladybee: that's comforting because I often subconsciously roll to my back during sleep.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
my ob says anything on your back is fine until 20 weeks. i'm normally a stomach sleeper but it is so uncomfy right now, i feel like i'm going to hurl when anything is near my stomach but i've read side sleeping is the best
stupidest mistake so far is when I got my bfp, I reached to take a prenatal vitamin immediately and accidentally took tylenol instead, oops! luckily it wasn't ibuprofen.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
I've caught myself in mid-lick of various batters many times. I haven't gotten around to signing up for birth classes yet because...well, no good reason, really. And now I'm scared the good ones will all be full. I'm also a back sleeper, but I asked my MW and she said if I'm comfortable I shouldn't worry about it, and that my body will stop letting me go to my back once the point comes that I really shouldn't be doing it (phew!).
grapefruit / 4400 posts
@Mae: But isn't pepperoni already cooked? You should be in the clear!
I broke many rules on purpose, so I don't consider any of them to be "mistakes"
papaya / 10343 posts
@HabesBabe: It is, but I assumed it was sort of like lunch meat? Like it was cooked but because it was cold and pre-sliced it should probably be heated to steaming before eating.

@MapleMoose: really no chicken salad? bc of the mayo?
i've forgotten to take my prenatal more times than i care to admit
grapefruit / 4213 posts
@Chillybear: It's fine if you make it yourself or know where it came from... but I was eating the kind from the deli which has the risk of carrying Listeria. I know the risks aren't huge but I never even made the connection.

I'm terrible at remembering my prenatals.
I have no issues with licking the batter when I'm baking. Actually, I don't follow most pregnancy food rules.
pomegranate / 3032 posts
@MapleMoose: i guess anything that sits out "on display" like that would carry a risk. I've eaten hot dogs that i've cooked on the grill but i dont think i could get one from wawa or 7-11 or even a ball game
papaya / 10473 posts
I ate Jimmy Johns subs every Friday. But I knew exactly what I was doing, so no mistake there

I haven't actually broken any of my doctor's rules. He said no sushi, no rare or raw beef, and no cheese from Mexico. Easy peasy. I have enjoyed alcohol on occassion, eat lunch meat almost daily, hot dogs, pepperoni(never heard that one), soft serve ice cream, the last couple weeks I have taken benedryl every night just to fall asleep, I have taken hot baths at least once every couple weeks, beef cooked to medium, eaten undercooked or uncooked eggs, slept on my stomach until it was too uncomfortable, a now I occassionally lay on my back. 38.5 weeks and this kid is still alive and kicking! I'll let you all know if he is born with 2 heads. Everything in moderation I say! Babies/fetuses are much tougher than we give them credit for. I refuse to believe that a sip of liquor or a ham sandwich is going to harm my little guy! Plus going 9 months following all of the "rules" sounds exhausting and miserable to me.

I think you're fine!
My DH and I go to Which Wich for lunch every Sunday and I get myself a toasted sandwich every time. My Dr said the real danger is the lunch meat you have at home that has a long shelf life that people reach into with their hands and the bacteria starts to grow. He said the stuff at sandwich places are fine because they wear gloves and it normally gets cut fresh that day.
At my last Dr appt, it was my birthday so I asked him if I could have a medium filet and he was like, "Why wouldn't you!?" Haha.
I also asked if I could have a glass of red wine and he basically told me that he couldn't tell me I could have one, but that his wife did have a glass every now and then during her pregnancies, lol. It was the best birthday meal EVER, haha!

@Mae: @HabesBabe: Pepperoni is loaded with nitrates, which are supposed to be a no no during pregnancy.
papaya / 10343 posts
@MsLipGloss: Well technically nitrates are a no-no any time Definitely on the "bad for you" list! My doctor said that I can still eat items with nitrates in them occasionally they just shouldn't be an all-the-time thing. I specifically buy nitrate free bacon and hot dogs when we eat them, and I don't eat ham or anything--- so pepperoni is the only food item I eat that has nitrates in it and I'm comfortable with making a homemade pizza and having A serving of pepperoni every couple of weeks.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Mae: Lol - too true! I ate a few pieces of pepperoni mahselfs while pg! I also ate a TON of nitrate-free hotdogs, too. I craved them constantly.
papaya / 10343 posts
@MsLipGloss: TJ's has amazzzing all beef nitrate free hotdogs. Like, best hot dogs ever. Nom! We bought some for this weekend because soon it is going to be too cold to grill and it may be our last opportunity until next spring!

I don't really consider the food stuff mistakes, I think it's more an overly-cautious set of guidelines a person can decide how strictly she follows. I do caffeine- did all through pregnancy 1, and have coffee or a soda most days in my current pregnancy (I'm not even a huge soda drinker but crave Coke/Pepsi when I'm pregnant). I do soft-serve, bacon, a little tuna, haven't taken prenatals past the first trimester (I have HG and they, without fail, make me vomit), and I think that's it. I'll probably have a sip of wine over the holidays, too. I really try not to stress too much and just follow common sense, while trying to eat and keep down anything that remotely sounds good.

Oh, I ate cookie dough all the time. ...although that was less of a mistake and more on purpose!
