i'm not much of a baker, so i'm ordering his birthday party cake. i think we're going to do a smash cake at home just the three of us on his actual bday tho and i'll probably bake that one!

For his actual birthday I just made a cake from a box in a 9x13 pan. He didn't even touch his slice! For his party this Saturday, I'm making him a 3 layer 4 inch round cake. I already have the cake baked and in the freezer so all I have to do is frost it.

I baked it! I've never been more proud of anything I've baked, ever!
ETA: Sorry, I have to share. The first was his birthday cake, the second his smash cake.

@lovehoneybee: amazing!! Looks so great!!
Lo's bday is approaching but I think I am just going to make cupcakes! Is that lame?

I would bake his smash cake but buy a cake for any party we might have for him!

I baked it... from a box and decorated it with icing in a can

@hellobeeboston: not lame! my friend/coworker is baking it for us (she's got a side gig and is great at it!) otherwise i'd go simple and do cupcakes, heck, i'd probably just buy them from the grocery store will my lack of baking skills!
@lovehoneybee: love love love! you should be proud of that cake!

LO's birthday is in two months and my plan is to make the cake for the party and the little smash cake for her.
ETA: Box mix for the cake but homemade buttercream frosting.

I am making a cake for his birthday tomorrow (!) hence my panicked "tell me about layer cakes" post!
@lovehoneybee: that is so awesome!

@lovehoneybee: great job!!! since you shared yours, I'll share mine.. Was for my DD's 5th and I used Mrs. Hopscotch's tutorial. I was so wiped out afterwards that my DS got a store bought cake for his 2nd bday only two weeks later, haha..

@hilsy85: tomorrow?!? Ahh! Happy bday L!!!
@T-Mom: loooove!! Great job!

For the first year I baked him one from a box (it was gluten free and vegan) to accommodate his allergies. For his second birthday my friend baked vegan cupcakes, which were a huge hit.

@T-Mom: Looks great! I didn't use Mrs. H's tutorial but hers was definitely my inspiration!

@lovehoneybee: @T-Mom: So impressive ladies!
I bought M's from the grocery store. No shame

neither?? my sister baked him rainbow cupcakes from scratch, which we topped with betty crocker vanilla icing (i freakin' love that stuff!)
the colours were actually way brighter, but i can't find a pic without an IG filter, haha!

@T-Mom: @lovehoneybee: yeah, rainbow cakes represent!

I hired someone to make it. Her cakes are so yummy! She's making Chloe's second bday cake, too.

I baked with my sister, but next year I may buy just because I saw a cute design that I could work with for the them and just add a few personal touches. Plus, it takes a huge stressor off my plate lol.

I alway bake. I love to make king cakes for Ellie because her birthday falls during mardi gras. I actually mail them BACK to family! So, in order, Lorelei's first birthday cupcakes, Ellie's fifth birthday red velvet cupcakes, and her fourth birthday king cake.

These are so amazing! I did cupcakes from a box and frosting from a can. I'm so not worthy

I buy. I can bake, but it's so much easier and yummier to pay someone else to do the work for me.

I always bake! First birthday was an eggless vanilla, second was egg and dairy free chocolate.

I have always bought my cakes. I took a cake decorating class too and realized I am not passionate at all about baking cakes.

I baked his as well and was so proud like @lovehoneybee: ! I bake a lot (and actually make a 20 layer torte cake each year), but I'd never tried natural food dyes so I was excited when it turned out okay.

I baked his smash cake from scratch. I used the banana cake recipe from the blog. I made the banana cake bites recipe as a dessert for the party too and they were a huge hit.

My pastry chef sister made his brunch birthday party cake and smash cake. I made his (healthyish) smash cake for the photo shoot we had a couple weeks earlier.
Eta holy moly sorry about the pic size

I love to bake but don't do it often so I baked lo's birthday cakes
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I've done both...first birthday we had 3 cakes, I made one, my mom made one, we bought one from a bakery.
Second birthday I made it, homemade cake but canned frosting because I was doing a mickey mouse face on the top of it and I am bad at frosting.
This year, I plan to bake a surprise inside cake for the family parties, gotta practice it!

Is both a good answer. N had 3 (!) first birthday parties. We made him, his own smash cake but ordered cake for other guests to enjoy. We also made a gluten free cake for people (me mostly) who couldn't have regular cake.
