@caffeinated: I agree! I think each (or most!) schools have a few programs that are super competitive (some more, some less :p), but overall most schools are "accessible" in terms of admission with strong (and sometimes only decent) grades.
I work in admissions, and it's quite the cycle each year, and neat to know what all of the other school's do too (in Ontario, anyways).

No, but the one I got into wasn't exactly bad...just a lesser Ivy.

Yes! Unfortunately, I didn't follow through because I got scared in regards to education and if I would have a job after I graduated. I wouldn't have the money for loans and my family is in no position to help me if that were the case. So, I didn't finish my last two years at Stockton University. I did luck out in meeting DH, moving to his area, and getting a job at a hospital though. It's help place for foot in the door with many opportunities.

@mrs. wagon: I was rejected from Brown early action, too! It was my top choice and I was totally bummed. But I also wound up meeting my husband at the school I did attend, so can't call that a mistake.
And now whenever I meet anyone from Brown who annoys me I can be relieved that I didn't have to live on their hall.

I got deferred at my first choice (I applied early) and later rejected. At the time I was obviously upset, but I cannot express how glad I am now. I ended up going to an in-state school that cost WAY less money, so I am in much less debt than I would have been. I'm actually kind of pissed that my high school didn't stress money issues more -- they were the idealistic, "Oh, just go to the best school you get into" sort.

yep! and i went! it was DH's top choice when he went to transfer from CC, but he didn't get in. it's funny because we probably wouldn't have ended up together if he did get in! and ironically, he's now in the paramedic program at that same school. lots of school pride over here.

Yes! I only ever wanted to go to one school, so I applied Early Decision and got in.

@mjane: haha yeah, same here (wouldn't have met Wagon Sr. if I ended up at Brown) so I guess alls well that ends well!!

Yes I did. Ditto on the note about Canada from @CAFFEINATED. It's much easier to get into a top-tier University in Canada than in the States.

Yes,
I didn't follow through though and get my degree there. I got into one of the best engineering schools which just happens to be in my hometown. I can't regret it too much though because I met DH there
Buuuut we are now paying quite heavily for each going there for 2.5 years at $25,000 per year (not including room and board)

Nope, got wait listed into my first choice. Ended up going to my second choice then transferred out after one year. Transferred 2 more times and went to/graduated from the college down the street from my house..

It's fun reading this post because I work in financial aid at a college and my husband works in the Admissions Office-- it's where we met
He can make your dream school come true, and then I can help finance it.
My dream school would be Amherst College- to me the campus is what college is supposed to be. I love it!
Maybe someday I'll work there .... but now we live/work in Boston.
(I went to UMass Amherst, close enough)

Yes. I got into all the colleges I applied to. Granted, I only applied to 4 colleges, all in my hometown area (1 state school and 3 private). I ended up going to the most expensive private school that I applied to. A part of me is glad I attended, since it had a great business college with excellent networking opportunities (got me the job I have now), but the part of me that forks over the $ every month for the student loans is pissed at my decision

I applied early decision to my dream university and was accepted. They have an extremely generous endowment (and scholarships) which meant that I finished with only around $20k in debt. The school costs around $56k a year ($224k for a 4 year degree) to give a frame of reference.
I also met DH there. So... major win

Yes, but I ended up staying in state (University of Oklahoma). It was cheaper and I ended up meeting the hubby later through an internship via my cousin so it all worked out. I still have student loans to pay, but no where near the amount if I had gone out of state!

Yep, got into NYU but they didn't offer as much scholarship as Boston College so off to Boston I went! But it was a much, much better choice for me in the end.
