I stopped after my BA, so no grad school for me... I'm in business and wasn't really attracted to an MBA so grad school just never came up as an option. Plus I had a lot of student loans debt to pay off!
If I did decide to go to grad school eventually, I would probably study science, computer programming or just go to law school.
If you went to graduate school: what did you study, and how many years did it take? Did you get a lot out of it?

Yup I did! I went for my masters in mental health counseling. It was a two year program. Looking back, it was kind of a waste (which is painful to say considering it was not cheap!). I should have gone for my MSW, which would have been more useful and would have taken the same amount of time. But I enjoyed grad school and did learn a lot about counseling/techniques. Of course, now I'm not working...but I do have my license and hope to get back into it part time post baby!

I did. I did my undergrad in studio art so if I wanted a job I had to keep going. I got my masters in art therapy, it took two years and I loved every second of it even though it kicked my tushy. Now I'm a sahm..... but I do plan to use my degree again in the future.

I'm halfway through my Masters in Library Sciences; it's a two year degree. I'm not working in the field right now but I hope to start working from home or part-time in a year or so after graduating.

Law school. I wouldn't just go to law school if I were you. It's a crazy amount of work, expensive and turns you cynical and argumentative. Poor Mr. Stroller....

I got my MA in Museum Studies! I work as the registrar for the provincial art collections here (I am in Canada) and I use my degree daily.
I am glad that I did it but sometimes I wish that I had done something a little more...practical. But I love it.

Got my BA in Psychology and went for my Master's in Industrial Organizational Psychology. It took me two years to finish all my classes but I am still finishing up my thesis 1 year later. I've moved to another state for DH. I haven't gotten any use of out of it yet, but once I get my actual degree (trying before baby comes in January) I want to use it....
But right now I've gotten no use of of my experience and education except debt.....

@mrbee: Depends on the area but corporate and private sector is way up. Public sector is cutting back, of course, but a lot of librarians are retiring so the market is opening up!

@mrbee: @Honeybee: my brother has that degree too! He's more into computers though. He was a librarian for awhile but now does IT for the library. I loved hearing his stories when he was a librarian .... people call the library to ask anything and everything!

Nope. Considering getting my MBA through Vamderbilt's executive MBA program. Need to look further into getting my company to cover it. My understanding is that my company will only pay for two classes per semester so it would take some time. But I don't think I could handle more than 2 a semester anyway since I'll be a full time working mom.

@mrbee: you could audit a con law 1L class - that was an interesting class 1L year. Auditing would get you out of more boring 1L classes and exams (or at least grades) and give you a chance to try it out. Plus having one class v. a full schedule will allow you to still be on HB at night

I went straight on to grad school for Social Work as my BA in Sociology wasn't really going to yield many job opportunities! I also was offered a free ride plus a stipend to attend grad school so it didn't cost me anything out of pocket and I actually ended up making money during the two year program! I had my master's by the time I was 23 and have used my degree throughout my career.

I have an MA in communication. I think I was a little scared of the real world and I got a full ride, so it seemed like a no-brainer. I go back and forth over whether it was worth it (financially and emotionally)!

@mrbee: My first year was fellowship, which was awesome because I didn't have to do anything. Just a fancy scholarship, basically. My second year I was on a teaching assistantship, so yeah, I helped teach. Most people in my program were on either teaching or research assistantships that paid for much of their tuition.
Awesome as it was, the catch was that you couldn't work outside of school, and of course you have living expenses, so most people still can't escape loans for that.

yup! MA in Education. many districts now require you to eventually get a master's or do the equivalent of a master's in classes, professional development, etc, so many undergrad program in education roll right into a 5th year master's program. my undergrad program didn't do that, so i just got my master's while teaching. thankfully the program was very working-teacher friendly!

I guess the upside is that if you take a non-student loan, you can at least discharge that debt more easily upon bankruptcy! Student loan terms are so onerous that it's crazy!

@mrbee: I can't speak for all schools, but I think it's pretty common. The idea is that you're "working" by producing research. But it's kind of dumb to give someone a fellowship their first year before they even know what/how to do that research, IMO I actually was much happier when I taught. I felt much more useful!

Yes, I have a Masters of Taxation to accompany my accounting undergrad degree. The program is pretty specific and is usually only offered through law schools as a joint LLM/Masters program.
I did it while working full time, and it took me 3 academic years to complete since I went part time.

Nope. I haven't really come across something I wanted to study in graduate school. A lot of my friends went on to get their graduate degree mostly because they didn't really know what they wanted to do and stayed in school after undergrad so they could hopefully figure it out. I had enough student loans by the time I got my BA that I didn't want to add anything more to it, especially if there wasn't anything specific I wanted to study or that would help with my career aspirations.

Yes, I have an Masters in Information Systems. I completed it while working full time, by attending classes on Saturday for 2 years. It was rough, but I am glad it's done.

Went to USC for my doctorate in physical therapy. It's. 3 year program including summers. I guess I got a lot out of it since you need the degree to be a PT but we don't make a whole lot of money and USC is EXPENSIVE. And I don't really love my career.

Ya. Did a one-year (including summer) M.S. in Exercise and Sport Science (took comprehensive exams instead of doing a thesis) and now in my second year of an educational doctorate (Ed.d.) program in Teaching and Curriculum in Physical Education. The masters opened so many doors for me, it was 1,000% worth it. The doctorate is still several years away from being completed so check back with me then and I'll tell you if it was worth it or not

Yes, I went for my Masters of Occupational Therapy. It was a 3+2 program in that I spent 3 on my bachelors and 2 on my masters and went through the summers. It is a requirement that you have a masters to practice occupational therapy

Yep. Took two years to get an MBA in sustainable real estate development. It was expensive but I've just paid off the crazy loan and am happily employed. I think it's definitely useful in my career, but I'd like to run my own projects. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to go into business for myself.

Yes, it's taken me 3 years of part time, year round classes. My company is paying for it. It's an engineering masters. It'll definitely help me. Perhaps not the topics directly, but it looks good on my resume and adds experience so I will get promoted faster
