I never got the chickenpox virus when I was a kid. I was vaccinated when I was 10. I have to go in a few weeks for a booster!
Did you ever have the chicken pox?

Yes and it was awful! I ended up getting pnuemonia and having to be hospitalized. Luckily, our kids got the vaccine, so they won't have to go through all of that!

Yup and it was horrible! I remember having to take these special baths (oatmeal, maybe?) and crying because my entire body itched so much and I couldn't scratch the itch. Then I did scratch one up near my eye and had a scar there that lasted into my 20's.
Will be getting LO the chicken pox vax for sure!

I got the vaccine and was lucky enough to get it twice.... It sucked!

Yup! Too old for the vaccine and I got it as a 7th grader! Since I was so "old" and had never had it, my parents figured I was immune or something. Nope. It was terrible -- I had them in my throat and on the bottoms of my feet

Nope! I got the vaccine in high school, but I didn't even know that you need a booster! How often do they suggest?

@sloaneandpuffy: Wait too old for the vaccine? I got the vaccine when I was like 16-17?
clementine / 814 posts
I got them when I was ONE month old. My mom said the doctor told her if she had not been breastfeeding I could have passed away - since I hadn't received any vaccines yet. I am not sure if he was exaggerating. Here I am today with loads of chickenpox scars but nothing freaky

@MrsBrewer: I mean I don't think the vaccine was out yet when I was a kid? I remember just hearing about it around the time I got the pox but I don't think it was widespread. I'm 34....

@sloaneandpuffy: Ohhh!! I was kind of freaking out thinking "what if the vaccine isn't working!" hahah phew.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
Yup. I was 4 I think. Wasn't too terrible if I remember correctly.

i did! i was 3 i think. still have a scar on my forehead from where i picked a scab off =( DH didn't, but the other kids in his family did. he's been tested as an adult & he's immune.

I never had it and I was going to get the vaccine as a teenager but they tested me and apparently I am immune. My brother never had it either. My father had a bad case as a baby but my mother never did so we probably inherited immunity from her!

Nope, DH finally made me go get vaccinated last year (I was 34) after two outbreaks at DD's daycare.

Yup, and really bad. in my mouth, on the whites of my eyes. The vaccine didn't exist when I was little. My sister got it at dance school. We had a 'chicken pox party', my mom and aunt put my cousins and I all together so that we'd all get it at once.

I had it around 1st grade, don't remember it being toooo horrible but it was definitely itchy! I think I took oatmeal baths. No scars!
eggplant / 11287 posts
Yep. I was 1 when I had them. My mom said I only got like 8 pox....just a couple on my tummy!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
My sister brought it home from kindergarten when I was 2, so yes. I don't remember it at all though. I couldn't tell you if I have scars from that-- I have so many random scars from random accidents that I have no idea what's from what. I'm a picker, but probably at 2 my mom could keep me from scratching and picking so bad.
persimmon / 1453 posts
My sisters and I caught it together. It was mild, we didn't get scars, and I don't remember it. My bouts with poison ivy were way worse!

yep, when i was young. don't remember what age. i think i was to young to remember.

@JustlikeHeaven: scary!!!
nope. got the vax because I had been exposed soooo many times but never got it, so mom didn't want me getting it as an adult

yup, when i was 2. but i don't remember it all. i do remember when my little sister had it...she will delirious with a crazy high fever!

@MrsBrewer: I'm not entirely sure. I'm getting conflicting information on the internet.
The ped told me that at one point, you only had to get one shot. Then they changed the vaccination, and now you need two.
I got mine in 1994, I think. I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I only got one shot.
I was encouraged to get the vaccination because Baby Jumper will be getting hers next month. If I was in the "need two shots" group, but only got one, I could get chicken pox from being exposed to her vaccination! Having the pox at 28 doesn't sound like fun to me -- so I'm going for a booster next week!

I was five, and had them TERRIBLY. It was also over Christmas. I still have three big scars from where I scratched/picked.
pomegranate / 3160 posts
Yep...my mom, my little sister (2 at the time), and myself (7 at the time) all had 'em at the SAME time... Poor Momma.
pomegranate / 3053 posts
Yes, supposedly twice - once when I was very little and once in high school. Yes, high school! Sucked! But it was a milder one though. Still have some scars on my legs...

I was 6, got it in the summer during vacation, and gave it to my little sister.

I never got it as a kid for some reason .....in my early 30's I was going to get the vaccine b/c I didn't want to get it as an adult .... I came down with chicken pox soon after that, it was disgusting. Got it from my mom who at the time had shingles =\ I took some medicine that was supposed to lesson the severity.... I think it worked b/c although it was disgusting, it wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be.

I got the chicken pox when I was 7 or 8. I don't remember it being horrible, the only thing that stands out in my mind was that it was during a huge snowstorm and my sister and I were upset that we couldn't play outside.
kiwi / 540 posts
I had the chicken pox in first grade. I think my friend gave it to me and then I gave it to my little sister. Good times. =P
