My insurance requires a class for these methods of birth control. The IUD class has to be taken in my 8th month of pregnancy if I want it inserted at my 6 week PP appointment and the tubal class (and signed documents) needs to be completed 4 weeks prior to giving birth.

What do you need a class for? My insurance paid for the whole thing, not even a co-pay for the office visit. -
Nope. I just had to let her know which one I wanted before the 6wk appointment so they could make sure my insurance would cover it. (I've already checked with my new insurance about it for this time
)

I've had two IUDs and never had to take a class! My friend wanted a tubal, and did need to sign consent forms weeks before birth if she wanted it then though. She didn't need to take a class.

No. I thought I would just get it inserted at my 6 week check up yesterday, but they do it at your 8 week to make sure you're 100% healed and not pregnant. She wrote me a prescription for cytotec to take the night before to soften my cervix, and I have a form to call insurance and get filled out. It just has what percentage they cover insertion and the actual device at, and what is my co-pay. Mines covered 100% so easy peasy, and now I wait two more weeks!

No, this is nuts I've never heard of this before! A class for BC? What's to learn, it is inserted and then done. Tubal is done and then that's that?

Nope. I had my IUD inserted 8 weeks pp, insurance covered 100%.

Nope and I've done both. I had an IUD after my first pregnancy and a tubal ligation after my second. For the tubal it was a constant conversation at every appointment with my OB. She just wanted to make sure that I was certain with my decision. Even though she also thought it was the right decision, she challenged it respectfully just to make sure that I was considering the implications.

No, but I don't think it's a big deal. I was given pamphlets. Hell, they should offer more classes because people mess up their bc all the time, ha!

No, how irritating. I mentioned early on that I wanted a tubal if I had to have a csection, just to get it in my chart, but that was it. I didn't even have to sign any forms.

@blackbird: haha! I actually think you should have to take a class for other methods of bc (pills, condoms).
I don't have to take a class. I think it's weird! You would think that talking to your OB would be enough?

@Freckles: I just called for more info and arghh....the next available tubal class is 7/22 and it lasts 1.5-2 hours long.
That won't be 4 weeks before my C-section (37 weeks) so the lady told me that I have to go in for a second surgery down the line. The IUD class is 1-1.5 hours long.
A vasectomy sounds good right now!

@autumnlove: A second surgery is a ridiculous solution! That's more expense to everyone involved. Surely the insurance company requiring this isn't THAT silly!

I don't understand what the class is for? What are they teaching you? I could see it more for the pill- at least then you need to know to take it wvery day? I guess it's just to make sure you understand the risks? So weird.

I live in CA and didn't have to take a class. My OB does it at 10 weeks. He gave a local anesthetic to my cervix when it was placed.
