Well, we honored a deceased family member with LO's middle name because it was important to DH. I didn't like the name originally but I grew to love it.

Yes - we use family names as middle names

My DS's middle name is Andrew after my DH's dad and grandfather

My DD's middle name is Sylvia after my Grandma

We named one of our sons' middle names after DH's cousin who passed away from cancer a few months before they were born. We told him the last time we saw him that we were going to do that, but couldn't tell him which son would have it, haha! I like to think it meant a lot to him to know that his name was carried on.

I don't think anyone else is slighted because none of the other first or middle names are after a family member. And honestly, if they were, too bad. It's our family and our choice.

There is a Jewish tradition of naming after a deceased relative (if you're of Eastern European ancestry - living relative is a tradition for those of different ancestry). We took the initials from our grandmothers and used those as DD's initials, but picked our favorite names with those initials. Many of our friends and families did it that way.

Yes. E has her grandmother's middle name. When/if we have a boy, he'll have two middle names: Dh's grandfather and my brother's.

Nobody said boo about us choosing *my* grandma's name over anyone else's. in fact, everyone's said it was nice and all that jazz.

DD's middle name is after DH's deceased mother and if we have another daughter she will have my mother middle name (also deceased)

We don't plan to for our girl. If our LO had been a boy he would have shared a middle name with his dad, grandpa, and great grandpa (because it is tradition and also we like the name). We did look at my side for names for girls but we just don't like any of them. I mentioned to my mom once I wish there were more names on our side that I liked and she agreed we did not have good options, so I don't think they'll care at all!

@princessandthebee: Yeah, I think it really only works because they are pretty normal names (Sommer - pronounced just like summer - and Alexander)!

Nope! Our grandparents have Asian names that would be difficult to pronounce, and the hubby said it was torture growing up with an Asian name. Kids made fun of his name all the time and doesn't want to put our kids through that.

We used my dad's name as our daughter's middle name (different spelling). While we had considered it prior to her birth, my dad died unexpectedly during my pregnancy, and so it became incredibly important to me. It also happens to be my middle name, and I've always loved it.

Yes. I'm expecting my second one now and if it's a boy, we will name him after my grandfather. Honestly, we couldn't agree on boy names so we started going through family names. My grandfather's name was the only one we both were ok with. I do not absolutely love the name - it's not one I would have just picked out the blue. But I like that it's a family name and my grandfather was a wonderful person.

No, we did not. And this is coming from someone who is named after her grandmother. And both my brothers are named for my grandfathers.

The main reason is that there is a lot of "history" attached to the names and I felt that it is an unfair way for a new baby to enter the world.

We named our son after my husband's uncle who passed away the year before, and also because we liked the name. We didn't set out to pick a name after a family member, but since the name happened to be at the top of our boy's name list, that was that.

Answered other, because in general, not liking a name is more important to me, than the pull to name my child after someone. There a few that I genuinely like, and am considering. And all though I don't like my mothers name, my top girl name is a play on her maiden last name. That one is very important to me since she passed away when I was young.

DS has the same middle name as DH and DD has the same middle name as me and my mom

My deceased FIL's first name will be our son's middle name. It's also my husband's middle name.

We're still deciding on his first name, but it will be chosen for aesthetic reasons rather than family significance.

Yep, our LO was named after my grandmother (First name) and DH's grandmother (middle name). Her name is Lydia Lutitia. I don't love The name Lutitia, but I did love that I can pass down stories about her paternal great grandma to her. We call her Lyddie Lou sometimes which I think is kind of cute!

DH has a very close childhood friend who he considers a sister and we gave A. her name as a middle name. If we were religious she would've been A's godmother, but we're not so we went with a middle name in her honor instead. She said she cried at work when we sent out a text message announcing the birth and name.
