We definitely needed it. We only had a 2 bedroom apartment during LO's first year. He slept in his bedroom starting around 8-9 weeks. When we had guests, we would move his crib into our room and the guests had a mattress on the floor in his room. We knew we were only living in that apartment 1 year. Now we have a place with a separate guest room/office.
How long do you plan on living in the house? Say in 3 years time you have a second child. Will you want/need to move again?

While it was nice to have a separate space, no we didn't need a nursery. Our changing station was in the bathroom and we used to have the office in the nursery, but we finally moved the office out when LO was about 6 months of age.

There was no second guessing our need for a nursery. OOT family can either sleep at a hotel or on the blow-up mattress in our living room or office. While LO isn't here yet, I can't imagine not needing her own space. Not just for all her stuff but for when she is no longer sleeping in our room.
Honestly, while I would love to have a guest room, our baby lives here and deserves a room a heck of alot more than guests who might come and stay every now and then. We even had this battle with my MIL who thought we should keep a guest room just for when she visits... once a year maybe. She will be getting a hotel.

In the beginning we didn't "need" the nursery but it is really nice to have and now at 5.5 months it is more of a need. We have a two bedroom apartment and use her room as a guest room/nursery. We have a daybed that pulls out to a king in there. We only have guests occasionally and it's usually my parents or sisters and I'd rather they stay with us to maximize their time with LO.

She didn't sleep in her room until she was 4.5 months old. The room still isn't decorated...the frames and prints are still in her closet!

If our condo deal ever goes through, we'll have a guest room/nursery combination...but we plan on LO staying in our room the first 5-6 months or so.

We have one and never used it. DS still sleeps with me at 2 and his nursery is basically a catch-all at the moment or served as a play room he rarely used (played in the living room more). We didn't intend not to have one, just the way it worked out, but totally doable without one from the start!
