That is one thing I still wish I had done before "settling down". I really regret it!
I did travel some in high school doing mission work. I went to Peru twice where we did some kids programs, built houses, etc. And a month in New Zealand which was awesome.

@jhd: it was GORGEOUS!!! I went in July which was their winter but it was still so lovely and the people are so diverse and interesting. The accent was neat although some were SO strong it was hard to understand. It is absolutely gorgeous. I want to go again and this time make it to Australia as well.

Yes. Rome for five months. Amazing experience. So glad I did it (and that I went to a non-English-speaking country).

I did! A year in Paris, one of the best decisions of my life. I ended up going back after I graduated and stayed a few more years...then eventually married a Frenchman.

When I was in high school I took an art history class and a western civ class with the junior college, we went to Italy, France, Austria, and England. I also took a summer in London studying theater in London.

I wish I did...I almost went to Venezuela, but it fell through. My younger brother went to Germany last summer for a term and my older brother spent one summer on missions in Haiti and one summer in Jordan when he was a teenager.

I did a two week "study abroad" trip to Finland (when I was in college). It was...not as enjoyable as some of the other places I've been.
In middle school/early high school I spent a semester in Dubai. It was an awesome experience.

I really wish i had. The semester I would have done it, though, Dh was getting deployed in the middle of it. It was just really shitty timing.

I spent a high school Summer and then half of my junior year in college, living with host families in Spain. My art history class was at the Prado- amazing! I LOVED it!

I really regretted not studying abroad whilst in college. One year after finishing grad school, I decided I wasn't going to live with regrets so I packed my bags and moved to London! I ended up staying for three years and then moved to Australia for a year after that (which of course led to meeting DH and still residing in Australia now, several years later).
It is never too late to follow your dreams! And in fact, I'm glad I moved abroad when I was working, not studying, as it gave me loads of money to spend on travel, shopping, experiences etc. Had I gone as a student, I would have lived a much more frugal lifestyle. Never too late my friend....I went abroad when I was 25 so you never know what opportunities may come your way!

No, I didn't. I couldn't afford it. I had to work throughout college so I wouldn't be able to afford the trip.
I did however got to visit my Aunt who lives in France for a month during the summer of my junior year in high school.

I studied abroad in Germany and I lived abroad for four years during grade school. I hope LO will be able to have similar experiences. They redefined the way I saw myself and the world.

I was a French major and desperately wanted to study abroad in Avignon the summer between junior and senior years, but had no money for it. For a long time it was a big regret of mine. I didn't travel outside of the country until I was 28 but have since visited/worked/studied in France, England, Norway, Sweden, Canada, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. I feel so lucky to have been able to travel so much internationally. Like @ree723 said, it's never too late!!!

A few of my friends took advantage of the Cuba and Itala semester abroad. I will definitely encourage my children to study abroad or do a semester at sea.

I spent my junior year in England and it was one of the best times of my life. My alma mater has since decided to only let people go away for a semester and I'm SO glad I went before they made that switch.

@mrs.pen: Good point about people who traveled pre-children. I have not travelled internationally since DS was born and don't expect to for awhile. DH and I prioritize travel though by making other sacrifices (sharing one car, inexpensive clothes, etc.), so I do believe it can be done with kids. You're fairly young, though, right? So even if you don't end up traveling internationally with your kids you could do so after they leave the nest!

I spent a semester in Hungary my junior year. I loved it. Both of my sisters spent a semester abroad as well, so I guess we all had a bit of travel lust. Probably because of the great experiences we had growing up hosting exchange students. I will certainly encourage my children to do the same and am trying to talk DH into hosting exchange students when we have high-school age children.

I studied in Madrid, Spain for a semester, and I LOVED it. We got to travel all over, and it really was the experience of a lifetime.

My alma mater actually started a program that incoming freshman that normally would be rejected simply due to space issues can choose to study abroad for the first year and if they have a good enough GPA they can return to the main campus.

@Katrocap: Yeah, it limits the freedom you have when you travel, increases the prices, etc... And whereas you can have your student aid or loans cover study abroad, you pay (a lot more) out of pocket for recreational travel!
I am young and I hope that someday DH and I could afford a month away in another country!

@Mrs. Pen: That is true, I was footloose and fancy free, which does make things a thousand times easier, but it's not impossible with kids. We'll be making another international move in the next year or two - maybe the UK again, perhaps Canada, possibly even France? With that move, we'll have an infant and a two year old so it definitely won't be a walk in the park, but it will be fine.
It's definitely harder but do a bit of research on what's available where, and the cost of living, and you might be surprised at what comes up. It might be easier once the kid(s) are school age but don't count it out if it's something you really want to do!

I did a summer semester in Siena, Italy. I loved it. It was such a good decision. I loved spending my weekends roaming around the country. It was a lot of fun.
DH (who was just my boyf at the time) flew out to visit me for a week, which was also wonderful.

@Ellie: when we did an Italy trip with my family we stayed in Siena and loved it! It was during a World Cup and their big summer festival (all I remember was we were in the snail neighborhood).

DH and I studied abroad for 6 months in the Netherlands. One of the best experiences of my college career and it's what gave us the "travel bug"--we've made a conscious effort to take an international vacation every year since then.
