My grandma taught me some, but she died when I was 8. I was in band though, so I didn't lose the musicality - and kind of taught myself piano later on.

I wish I had been able to take real lessons!

I did twice, for a year each time. I hated it for the most part. My brain just isn't wired for it. I switched to the drums and did much better there.

I did and I sucked at it. I took it for five years b/c my parents wanted me to go and kept making me go because my grandmother took classes. I had no heart in it. I can still barely play after all those years of lessons

Yep, I took lessons from age 9 until 16. And now I remember almost nothing because I haven't played in forever

I did for about 10 years. I was good at reading music, but never practiced and so was not very good!

One teacher was old and wasn't good, the other was so strict and made me cry. Mind you I lived in HK at the time so we HAD to take those level tests, and we had HUGE recitals with like 500+ people every year

My big break was when we moved to the US and I finally had a choice! My sister ended up learning and I was so bitter because she had such a fun and good teacher that helped her love piano!

I didn't but I really wish I had. As a musician myself I know I will introduce my future kids to an instrument, but not sure if it will be piano or not.

I took both violin and piano. I didn't enjoy practicing either but loved being part of a youth symphony with my violin. I didn't keep up piano but glad I can play. I still play violin. I want my children to play an instrument.

Yup. My Mum is a piano teacher and her whole family is musical so it was kind of a given that I would learn. I took lessons from 7 through till I was 21 and I just recently got my old music books out to refresh my memory.

I can't say I always enjoyed the practice and I'm not one of these naturally musical people who can play by ear but I still enjoy playing.

No, but I always wanted to. I would love for DD to have lessons, but we don't really have room for a piano right now.

Yep, started at 5 years old and my grandma thought i was behind! I played until university (with some breaks in between) and i'm really glad/grateful that i learned how to play. We now have a piano in our house and i love relearning all of these pieces (when LO lets me anyway).

@sunny: I totally know what you mean. You lose all of that muscle memory, and the playing sounds awkward if you don't play often!

I'm Chinese, so of course I did, haha. I played the piano for 12 years and was pretty decent back in the day.. However, I stopped in college and recently just tried to play the old piano at my parent's house. Sadly, I was horrible and could barely read any music. At least my brother still plays regularly!

I took piano lessons from the time I was 7 years old until 17. I really enjoyed the piano but HATED playing in my city's music festival each year. It gave me so much anxiety.

For about 10 years. And since I haven't touched the piano in at least a year, I'm sure I've lost a ton of that knowledge. Its sad to know that all of my parents' money might be gone down the drain.
I'd like LO to learn an instrument, but I certainly won't push her into it. It did take up a LOT of time.
