During labor, did you tear?
I was told that I have a second degree tear, and after doing some research, boy it could have been worse!

Yep, 2nd degree on top of an episiotomy. Took like 3 months to heal.

Yes. I had 32 stitches. I tore in a star shape.
Aka my vagina exploded.

@FutureMrsMcK: @Rainbow Sprinkles: Y'all have me squirming just thinking about your stories! OUCH!!!

An inner tear and minor grazes from the shoulders (I think?). I don't know how many stitches, but they'd all dissolved within a week.

awww.... I wish I hadn't clicked on this thread! I'm so scared of the tearing & episiotomies for the reason @FutureMrsMcK: mentioned.

Yes. Although it was one of my fears, at the time I didn't care! I just wanted LO out of me! The midwife refused to tell me how bad it was and when I asked how many stitches it required, she responded that she thinks of it as "one continuos stitch" that she doesn't count them. I figured it was pretty bad but it was the least of my worries at the time.

3rd degree, I don't even want to know how many stitches I had, but she was down there a while so I imagine a lot. I literally couldn't move faster than a turtle for two weeks.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Oh.My.Goodness. That is the stuff nightmares are made of. I so wish I hadn't read this!!!!!

I asked DH about how many stitches I had and he said he thought maybe six. She was a larger baby so it could have been worse.

@shopaholic: Well the good news is they even if you get mangled you'll heal. It took a lot of patience and a few tries (and a few glasses of wine) but sex is better now than pre-baby.

Yep. 2nd degree. Didn't know it happened, but I could feel him stich me up (ouch)
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
oh yeah. I also got the "oh it's not bad..it's one long stitch" from my OB so I'm not even sure. I wasn't brave enough to look until a couple weeks later (the PP nurse warned me not to!). I was sore until 12 weeks PP!
the PP nurse mentioned it being 2nd degree perineal, but I also felt/saw stitches along the labia (inside), sooo..idk!
but it does get better

Nope! My MW rarely sees bad tears, only one 4th degree tear in the last 20 years... most of her mommas only have "skid marks".

I had a second degree tear but have no idea how many stitches it required. I didn't't feel the tear happen, nor did I feel the stitches afterwards, which was nice as that had been one of my biggest fears! Recovery wasn't bad either - it hurt to laugh and sneeze for a few days but by the end of the first week, it was all fine.

3rd degree with Lo, 2nd with baby 2.
I managed without pain meds and healed nicely for both though. I'd say within a week I was feeling good down there

Yep! 2nd degree with some stitches. It took her about 45 minutes to fix me up down there. I was sore for several weeks!

I just had a couple of minor internal scrapes, no stitches required. I only had 3 real pushes, & my dr said that she was worried I was going to "blow" if I had many more pushes. A chilling image that I'm glad she waited to share with me until after delivery.

I tore the first time, lots of little tears, lots of stitches. No stitches the second time!

1 2nd degree tear and some minor ones. Took me 5-6 weeks for the soreness to go away.

2nd degree with both babies... but I was feeling fine within the first week afterwards!

I have no idea. I asked and my doctor said "not bad at all, you'll heal very nicely". She wouldn't really give me an answer but she was right. I healed nicely! Pain stopped after maybe 5 days.

I had 2 stitches and a small 'graze'. No major damage and I was fine within a few days.

Woah, 30+ stitches, you ladies have my major sympathy. I had a few little skid marks, one stitch. Even that was a painful little sucker, so I don't even want to contemplate a whole vagina full of them. I pushed for hours, too, and my baby had a huge head.

@FutureMrsMcK: Good to know... I was just going to post another thread about "what it's like after the tear/episiotomy?"
@highwire: *shudders at the thought*
@PrincessBaby: Yes! I'm glad she didn't say that to you during delivery!

I shouldn't have read this. The thought of labor is freaking me out. The thought of tearing makes me shudder.
nectarine / 2834 posts
I don't think so. After I delivered LO, the doc said, I don't think you'll need any stitches. But then after I delivered the placenta, she said, I'm going to put 2 internal stitches in.
I'm so aware of how lucky I am! I didn't need an ice pack/motrin/anything for pain...couldn't believe it! My doc did perineal massage during the last few pushes and maybe that's what helped.

100% pain free now (besides my hemorrhoids but that's elsewhere) and I'm a month PP and have been without pain for a couple of weeks already
squash / 13764 posts
One small tear and one small stitch. The soreness only lasted about a week and a half, and I only needed motrin. I never used any ice packs or anything else. I was definitely lucky! I was really scared about tearing/being stitched up, but I didn't feel myself tear and I definitely didn't feel the stitch.

@Smurfette: that's what I was most scared of too - well, postpartum in general. birth lasts hours and postpartum is much longer, yet no one really talks about it! but I can 100% tell you after laboring with no epi (got it at 10 cm, they didn't believe me in triage that I was moving as fast as I was) and having a really bad tears that it's 100%++ worth it and you forget it so fast! Even when I was hobbling around my house for the next couple weeks I didn't think, all things considered, that it was terrible. It's so cliche, but your baby is so worth it!! you'll be awesome

i had a second degree tear with olive even though she was under 5 pounds. they sure seemed to do a ton of stitches for it!
honeydew / 7687 posts
Second degree that healed fine and two internal tears that got infected and pulled apart in my second week pp. I thought I was being a baby about it and waited to get it checked and ended up with emergency surgery two days before we were moving out off state. Very stressful though starting to feel better now. Hopefully any preggos reading will learn from me and not ignore their body telling them something's up!
