I wanted my name to be Victoria, Samantha or Emily! Did you have name envy when you were growing up?

My name was very common and I didn't like it. But it had a great story behind it, so it felt special because it had meaning.

When I was really, really little I loved the name Elizabeth and the nn Lizzie.
But after age 10 I LOVED my given name and I wouldn't change it for anything. It's unique, but not weird and it has a beautiful sound to it. I never tire of hearing my name.

I hated both my full name (Margaret Katherine) and my nickname (Meg) when I was younger- like through high school. I thought Margaret sounded like an crazy old woman who lived in a Victorian house full of cats. And I hated how monosyllabic Meg sounded amongst the Jennifers, Stephanies, and Heathers, etc.
Now I like both and can't imagine having a different name.

Yes, but I never had a particular one I wanted instead....it was just really annoying growing up a Sarah born in the mid-80s. I never had a single class from Kindergarten through Senior year of high school that didn't have at least one other Sara/h in it. I even have a SIL named Sarah!
Now I love it, but I didn't really start to appreciate and like it until I was an adult.

My name WAS Victoria and I hated it. I always dreamed of being named something more "sophisticated" like Paige, Claire or sloane (think Sloane Peterson). I guess the grass is perpetually greener!

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm intrigued by the use of "was". Did you change your first name??

I was emphasizing that even from someone who had the name that autumn cherished, I hated my own name. I do go by a nickname.

@Autumnlove: @Mrs.Jacks: I always wanted to be Victoria, also! I used to always name my barbies Victoria. I thought it was soooo sophisticated and fancy!

I've always hated my name (Megan). It was always so common and I hated feeling like I had to go by a nickname or a last initial tacked on.
People have always told me I "don't look like a Megan".

Oh i wanted Samantha too... but not so much anymore. I like my name. Kelly (it's not very common in french Canada)

My mom told me when I was pretty young that my dad actually wanted to name me Emily. After I found that out I wished that they'd named me that instead of my actual name (Danielle). I love my name now though.

I always hated my name (Renee), and unlike my brother (Nicholas), I couldn't just go with a nickname. With our kids, we figured we'd use names that have loads of nicknames built in, in case their name felt too fussy or too short or too long.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@cyneswith: We did the same. Our girls both have tons of nicknames already

I think I had a brief Bianca phase but now I really do not like that name. Sorry to any Bianca's!

I told my mom I wanted to change my name to Nicole once. But other than that one time, I've always loved my name. In the past couple years it has become extremely popular and when I was young it was almost unheard of and I got lots of compliments on it, now I just get, 'the the grey's anatomy dr with that spin off show!' yeah. Like her. Ugh. I wish it hadn't gotten trendy because I get sad when people talk about how it's overused and they're over it as a name. I can't imagine having a different name though, it suits me:)
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Andrea: haha I did too. It went thru a short phase of popularity.
@Mrs. Jacks: Do you go by Tori? A woman I worked for goes by Tori and her name is Victoria. I think it's beautiful too!
@Running Elley: oh yeah, I did the same thing. My mom told me I was nearly named Noelle Joy, but then my grandma vetoed it because I was born in September. So I grew up loving that name.

My mom made the mistake of telling me the other name they had considered for me (Leigh), and I was obsessed with it for a few years. I thought my name (Abby) was bad luck ... Seems silly now in retrospect.

I have a traditional Korean name and always wanted an english name growing up. I always use "jennifer" as my go to name for takeout orders, etc. cuz it's too hard to re-say and spell my name krn name every time

I have a super typical mid-80s name and I hated it. I wanted to be something exotic like Genevieve or Madeleine when I was little. Or Leslie (I have no idea why, I just loved that name!).
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I have always loved my name because it is unique. I've never met another person with my name (Tana).

My name is pretty common now, top 25 on the baby name list, but it wasn't common at all when I was little! I liked my name, but hated that I couldn't ever find it on magnets or stickers or pens in gift shops!

My name, Jennifer, was like the #1 name in America from 79-81 or something like that. Like FutureMrsMcK, I NEVER had a class where I was the only one. I remember in 2nd-6th grade, there was another Jennifer who even had the same first letter of the last name (H), so I couldn't even be Jennifer H, teachers had to say my first and last name.
So basically every year on the first day of school when I saw the other Jennifer H was in my class again, I was all "FML!!!"
The only good thing that came of it was by the time I got to college, my circle of friends involved so many other Jen's that I was "nicknamed" my maiden last name, which was Hart. So similar to what guys do to each other calling each other by their last names. It stuck so hard that most of my girlfriends I stay in touch with leave me voicemails, etc and say, "Hey, Hart! Call me back" or whatever...I think it's endearing somehow:)
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
Oh, but I never had another name in mind. Just pretty much not Jennifer. Until college when everyone quit calling me Jennifer & started calling me Hart. Then I didn't mind it!

Yes, when I was younger I hated that my name could also be a boy's name. I used to tell people my name was Jessie JoAnn instead of Jessie Jo, I love it now.

When I was 10, I told my mom that I wished my name was "Katrina" instead of Charlene. I think she was pretty mad

My name is not popular at all but I always wanted something different because people were always pronouncing it wrong. Now that I'm older, I really like that my name isn't common.
grapefruit / 4703 posts
@mrs. bird: I've never known anyone over the age of five with your name - it's such a pretty name, but I can see how it would be annoying as it's growing in popularity.
I went through a phase where I wanted to spell my name weird (I think it was Raychel) in middle school.

@Rachel: My elementary school BFF's name was Rachel and she had a Rachelle phase! I still tease her about it!
clementine / 994 posts
In elementary I went through a phase where I didn't like Joy because it was so short. I wanted a longer name, but for some reason I never used my full name. Too long I guess? I love my name now.
@cocobee: My parents said that Noelle was actually in the running for my first name, too, since I'm a Dec baby. How crazy would it have been if we were both Noelle Joy??
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
I never did and still don't love my name. I don't dislike it either and I never came up with an alternate.

I always felt like my name was boring and not pretty. I always loved Lily because the cursive L is so pretty!
