My hospital did not provide pacifiers because they are really pro breastfeeding....we definitely could have used one because LO wanted to latch onto me the whole time we were there! I remember reading one of Mrs. Yoyo's blog posts that mentioned Nuk pacifiers...I made DH stop at Target on our way home and I hobbled in to buy a few packs!
I will definitely bring pacifiers to the hospital when I have Baby 2!

Yes they did provide pacifiers but my LO was never interested in them at that time

yup! they gave her those Avent brand Soothers. It's the only brand/type of pacifier she'll take !

They provided them but we specified we didn't want to use them.

Yep, she was crying nonstop one night so they brought one and it calmed her down enough to nurse and fall asleep.

Nope. She didn't cry much and she didn't seem to need one. They don't hand them out a lot at our hospital. They want the baby to get used to breastfeeding before trying out the paci.

Yes...she had to get an IV and inter muscular shots and took her away for those and when they brought her back she would have a paci in her mouth.

Ours does not. They don't recommend pacifiers until after 4 weeks if you are planning on breastfeeding. They make it clear in the paperwork that if you want your baby to have one, you have to provide it. I was surprised they took such a firm line on the subject! I got some of the Avent ones but I'll probably try and 'follow the rules' 'til we get a bf'ing routine down.

Yup - the Avent "Soothie" pacifier. Thank goodness they had them there as LO needed one ASAP!
That's the only brand she will take now, she hates all other brands.

Yup, they wheeled her into my room with a paci!! Didn't even ask. My hospital says that they are all pro-breastfeeding but that's a big exaggeration. They also kept asking if I wanted to give her formula.

We just got 1 Avent Soother when she was screaming her head off and they were trying to do the hearing test. Otherwise, no...

Yup, they gave her the Avent Soothie brand too. Funny enough, she doesn't like that kind anymore, only likes Nuk.

Yes, soothies. We never had a problem with taking away the pacifier with both DS and DD so we didn't think it was a big deal!

Yes at one point she came back from the nursery with an advent soothie in her bassinet. We have used pacifiers from day one and have had no issue with breastfeeding.
I was talking to a friend of mine recently who is a pediatric resident at a children's hospital. They are currently going through the process of becoming a certified "baby friendly" hospital and she said part of getting that certification is that they can not give pacifiers to well babies (they are still allowed in the NICU)

@MamaMoose: Yup, my hospital is certified 'baby friendly.' It's actually awesome. So many of the things I read about and wanted in my birth plan are done automatically there, like immediate skin to skin and 24/7 baby in room with mama.

The hospital I work at uses them for painful procedures as part of the neonatal pain control policy, but usually not otherwise unless Moms ask for them. Only NICU actually stocks them, so if LDR or mat needs them they need to come and sign a sheet to get them and have them billed to their unit's budget.

Our hospital didn't give us one until we were leaving, they typically don't give them unless you really really want one.

The hospital I delivered at doesn't give them unless the parents ask. We were never offered one.

@MamaMoose: @JerricaBenton: I also delivered at a certified baby friendly hospital, so no pacifiers allowed. They are really focused on breastfeeding on demand.
