It's all about motivation level. First he learned mama, papa and animal sounds and he's moved on to a lot of other things, but somehow words like cookie, donut and cupcake he got after hearing just one time and things like colors he recognizes but won't say! Words like broccoli will probably never happen lol.

I think colors and shapes are somewhat abstract. DS started with with nouns like "Mama", so many animals, and everyday objects like "shoe" and "water". He moved on to verbs like "drink", "eat", "jump". Next came simple combinations like "Mama sleepy"

I've read that boys tend to pick up more singular words first while girls tend toward phrases. It's been true for the babies in our family. I'm sure there are always exceptions, but it's interesting.
