No. But I've never been terribly squeamish around doctors. I had no problem breastfeeding or pumping (or getting examined) by any of the many docs, nurses, etc while in the hospital. But through 2 months of breastfeeding (and pumping) and 4 months of pumping I've not loosened my modesty I don't think. I would only nurse or pump in front of my husband or my mom mostly. I did nurse once in front of my brother and once in front of a close friend, but both times I sat in such a way that nothing was really showing. I also pumped a few times in front of various people but I'd make them leave the room while I got hooked up then I'd throw a blanket over me. Nobody needs to see that. lol

Yes, in the sense that I didn't care who I BF in front of, etc.
No, in the sense that I became more modest in the way I dressed!
eggplant / 11408 posts
Yes! Somewhere in the middle of it, actually. I got to about 8 and when they were checking me, I really truly didn't care that there was no sheet and people were walking in and out of the room. I just wanted to be done!\
It's funny, because I had such little modesty to begin with, but it somehow went down. My doctor came up to my room PP while one of my boobs was hanging out, and he quickly stepped outside the curtain to let me cover up. I was like, "dude, whatever. You saw evvverything yesterday. Like I care if you see my top!"
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
Yes, but I had a c-section. I think it was the breast feeding issues that waved my modesty off for good. I doubt there's anyone in Toronto who hasn't seen my boobs.
honeydew / 7589 posts
Yep. I labored in the nude and because I had an emergency transfer, I was seen naked by like 4 EMT's, 3 fireman, 2 midwives, 6 nurses, 1 doctor, my photographer, my mom... who knows who else.
I'm just like, F it. It's a naked body. Whatever.
Pretty much everyone I've ever seen since giving birth has seen me nursing. I have zero issue with that.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
Between the on-call doctors and nurses who came to check my stitches every few hours, I seriously would have dropped my pants for the janitor if he had asked. I think he's the only one who didn't inquire about my bits and pieces.

No, but I am mega modest and in all honesty, that was something the really put me off bf'ing - the thought of nurses or anyone grabbing me in that way really freaked me out. I am not a 'whip a boob out' type of person, I love how easy and natural it can seem for some ladies but for me not so.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
In the hospital I didn't care, however I felt more comfortable nursing (well attempting) in private with only DH or other females present.
I didn't feel comfortable nursing without a cover in front of my dad or other male family members and I don't see that changing. I've always been comfortable around females though, that doesn't bother me, my mom, sisters, friends, ect have seen my boobs when pumping and I change in front of them, no issues with that.
Edit: there were 4 of us who gave birth within a month of each other, we used to have "pumping" parties when together where we would all talk as you heard the "woosh woosh" but I usually threw a cover over the top.
honeydew / 7916 posts
Hahaha yes. My OB was considerate and reminded DH that he was taking photos that included not just his baby but his wife's lady parts in all their just-birthed glory.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
Yep! I had about 4 nursing students practicing on my second l&d. It was a lot of "oh i wanna see" "can i do the check" and "oooh my first time seeing that". Awesome, have at er
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
During the birth and for exams, obviously, but I have returned to my modest ways.
papaya / 10473 posts
No. Due to our insurance, I had to give birth at the hospital I work at. I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of nudity in front of my coworkers... It was bad enough that the LC whose office is next door to mine had my boobs in her hands approximately 26 times during my stay.

Even in the beginning of labor I was trying to keep myself covered up; but at a certain pain level all modesty goes out the door! My mom told me so, but I wad still sure I would be mortified to be exposed! She was, of course, so right! I was like, "Bring the stirrups, let's let this show on the road."
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
Well my ILs were in the room when I gave birth, and my MIL had a front-row seat to the show...
pomelo / 5258 posts
I walked miles around the hospital in my gown laboring. I leaned facing the wall during contractions so I can only imagine who saw what at that point.
My parents came to the hospital right after I had LO. I was learning to BF and my top was totally exposed. My dad waited in the hall initially but I decided I didn't care if he came in if he didn't care that I was exposed. We both survived. I don't think my top was covered the entire time I was in the hospital (it hurt way too much to cover my poor nipples).
Generally I nursed uncovered with a top over a nursing tank in public.

@travelgirl1: I've seen 'em!
I was just telling a couple girlfriends this weekend that at one point I was laboring in the tub, DH was doing nipple stimulation, and I decided I needed my mom. Buck naked. Whatevs.

I haven't given birth yet, but IF treatments have made me get over being shy in front of doctors. I don't even know how many people have seen me naked anymore. That number will be going up soon. I've spent a lot of time in stirrups.
clementine / 918 posts
I knew I'd be completely immodest during birth, but I was still surprised that I pumped uncovered in the PICU (all the walls are windows). I had doctors come in, start having conversations and then look down and were like "Whoa, I'm sorry do you want a minute?"... Nope, I do this all day every day, if you wait for me to be done I'll never be able to talk to you about my son. I don't think these pediatricians thought they signed up for smooshed boobs in pumping flanges everyday but that's what they got

This was SO me! I guess I wasn't super modest to begin with but childbirth and nursing took that to a whole new level! It's very liberating!
grapefruit / 4311 posts
Nope nope nope - I was modest as ever except during the most painful part, and when I had no choice during pushing
grapefruit / 4213 posts
My top half was covered but the belly down was wide open for hours and hours during labor. So half modest I suppose?
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
No! I had a hospital gown and a blanket over my lap the entire time I was in the hospital, the nurses would lift up to do checks or whatever, but I was never just hanging out in the open for any time other than pushing..that was out of necessity, and it was just my mom, DH, midwife and a nurse or two in there.
While trying to BF I had a couple nurses see my nips and my mom may have caught a glance but I stayed covered anytime anyone came in to see me.
I'm very modest, even at home if it's just DH and I, I'm always at least semi clothed (skimpy for me is undies and a t-shirt!)
persimmon / 1273 posts
With doctors and other medical professionals, yes. But in general, no.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
Nope, don't care. I had a csection so a whole bunch of people saw me bottomless while they prepped me!
One of my nurses checked my bleeding, my stitches and helped me breast feed. We kept looking at each other, and her at my husband, like we knew each other but couldn't put our fingers on it. Then we realized she was from preschool! We saw her yesterday and it wasn't awkward at all.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I don't care if it's medical professionals. But i didn't want my business hanging out unless it had a reason to be, lol. I stayed under a sheet (it was FREEZING in my delivery room). I'm cool with doctors, nurses, etc. I did appreciate that the nurses asked before touching or grabbing me, though.
blogger / pomegranate / 3201 posts
Definitely yes while I was in the hospital, but I am still modest in that I'm not comfortable showing a lot of skin in public.
persimmon / 1343 posts
Yep, even while in labor, I just didn't care. It isn't as if noone has seen a naked body before
If I was ever nervous about medical professionals seeing my body that all went away in the hospital! Haha. I still feel a little uncomfortable nursing in front of certain male family members (brothers, brother-in-law), but anyone else I don't care much.
watermelon / 14467 posts
I wore a hospital gown at the hospital, but my boobs were pretty much out for everyone to see once she was born. Next time I'm laboring naked, because I got so freaking hot.
pomegranate / 3127 posts
Yeah
That wasn't even that bad compared to all the checkups and needle sticks and things in the nine months before... way too much giving up of privacy!
eggplant / 11287 posts
Not after DD1, but it did after DD2 because I delivered stark naked and spent most of my time in the tub, walking around, or on all fours. That must have been a sight....
grapefruit / 4006 posts
yes...so many people checking your parts, helping you breastfeed - so i was way less shy about breastfeeding than i initially thought i would be.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
Pretty much! I don't BF without a cover in public but I do in front of anyone I feel like won't mind. Haha!
In the moment I didn't care at all. My nurse in the recovery room literally yanked my gown down, grabbed my boob and shoved it in LOs mouth and held it there for me (I couldn't get the hang of it to save my life).
nectarine / 2765 posts
@Leialou: I agree, I had so much traffic down there with IF treatments that before I gave birth I'd had countless dr's & nurses poke around down there.
I had no shame during childbirth. The actual birth took place in an operating room (requirement for twins) in front of about 20 people...drs, nurses, nicu team, anesthesiologist and for the hell of it I let some students watch the show...come one, come all. I honestly could not have cared less who saw. My recovery nurse ended up being my brothers ex-girlfriend and even that didn't make me uncomfortable.

I've never been shy in front of medical personnel or even my mom & best friend but my best friends MIL is the head night nursery nurse at the hospital we gave birth at. I've know her very well for years but would never voluntarily allow her to see me exposed, but one night I needed to make sure our latch was right & she was the only nurse available. She even ended up touching my boob & I weirdly wasn't embarrassed & still am not lol she & I both prefer though that those incidents are kept to a minimum lol
pineapple / 12526 posts
No. I dont like people looking all up in my junk and I would never have nursed in public without a cover. Its just how Ive always been. I dont like to be touched either.
pomelo / 5041 posts
I agree with the comment about being naked on the operating table, so yes my c-section wasn't modest at all - I mean hell, they start out by sticking a catheter into your vagina. I was much more open about breastfeeding in front of people than I ever thought I would be, in the hospital and at home - I pretty much told family they'd have to get over seeing my boobs. But I still wouldn't breastfeed uncovered in public or anything like that. I'm less modest, but still modest to some extent.
pear / 1787 posts
Yes! I didn't care who saw what either during or after. During I was obviously focused on labor and delivery, and after I was SO HOT that I just hung out in the mesh underwear and occasionally had a sheet over me if it was comfortable.
