Mine did. My first car was used. It wasn't new. I think I plan to do the same. I'm not sure if they will have to pay me back for it though.

Yeah, it was paid off and a hand-me-down but it was originally purchased by them! They also bought my second car when the first one started acting really weird.

Yep, they did. It was used but fairly new and in good shape. In fact, I still have her. I'm waiting on kids (we're NTNT) before I get something new I think. I did have to pay for everything else regarding my car (when it needed tires, brakes, insurance, etc.)
FI's parents did not do this. At all.
We are kind of divided over how we plan on handling it, but so far we've agreed to maybe have them earn money for a car and we'll match whatever they earn. They can do this by saving bday/Christmas money (it CAN be done, my brother had over 7K when he turned 18 of bday money he never spent!), mowing lawns, an actual job, etc. Either that or we pay for it and they pay back 1/3 or something.

A great-aunt bought me savings bonds when I was born that I put toward buying a car when I was sixteen. My parents put several hundred dollars toward it as well, plus paid for my car insurance. It was a '95 purple Dodge Neon, and cost $3200...ah, the car of my youth.
When that car died during college, my parents gave me their old car (which I still drive now) and bought a new one for themselves. I am very thankful, though I would love to have a car made in this millennium!

Yup, but it wasn't my car, per se. It was another car that we had as a family. Eventually, it went to my brother.

No, I paid for it myself. My grandma gave me a small gift that I was able to put towards my car when I got it. It was a used car, and I would encourage my kids to also buy used. When you're a new driver, that first car is usually a bumper car anyway. ;P

My first car was my high school graduation present, a sweet 93 Dodge Spirit that my parents paid $600 for.

I didn't get a car until I was a sophomore in college. My parents bought it, they put all the money that I saved them by getting scholarships plus some inheritance money into the car.
It's actually still my one and only car. Well it was until hubby and I had to switch because my car wasn't baby friendly, so now he drives it.

I drove an old car of my parents' in high school, and then when I graduated from college and needed a car of my own, my parents put a down payment on a used car for me. I paid the monthly payments... and eventually when I got married, we sold it and put the money towards the wedding! Win win.

My parents paid for “my” first car, but I didn’t technically own it – they did (and could take it away if they wanted). It was a used Honda Civic. I was responsible for paying my own insurance, and paying for all car-care costs: oil changes, gas, any repairs, etc.

Yes, my parents paid for it. My first car was a used car. My second car was handed down by my dad 1.5ish years later when they decided my first car (a convertible) wasn't safe enough. They also helped me get my 3rd car, a new car that I leased when I was 21 (helped sign for financing).

Yes. In high school I used my mom's old car. And then in college my parents bought me my own car. But it was still technically theirs. When I graduated from college I moved to NYC where I didn't need a car so my parents sold the car and kept the money. So it was never really "mine" it was their car that they allowed me to use. When I moved to Nashville I bought my own car.

I didn't get my first car until I Was 25 years old...I bought it myself.

Yes, they did, but like @yoursilverlining it was made very clear that it was their car that I had to earn the privilege to use. When I went to college, I was supposed to buy it from them in payments, but they ended up gifting to me for Christmas.
I think if we are in the financial position, we will probably buy our child a modest car, with the expectation that they will pay for gas and maintenance. I do like the idea of them saving and us matching it, too. Maybe we will give a certain modest dollar amount and will match whatever they save on top of that for a nicer car?

Yes. My parents paid for my first car. I was fortunate to have younger siblings that pulled them in many differente directions. They got me a car so I too wouldn't need to rely on them for transportation. I think the car was only 3 years old. I was very lucky.

They did. It only cost $500. That's pretty cheap for a car.

My dad was worried about me buying a used car so I bought one of their older cars. They probably could have sold it to someone else for more and they ended up getting a new car for themselves so they were generous. But then that car had all my sisters learning to drive on it too since I left it at home in college. Poor beat up car. I took it back after a couple years in college and it had so many little weird little things going on with it. I used to be extremely accurate at guessing what speed I was going since the speedometer only worked 25% of the time.

yes they did. my dad surprised me with a new honda accord ex in our driveway when i was 17. i'm not going to be doing that for charlie or olive!

I received an old car from my parents, while they got a new car. Whenever they got a new car...they would sell mine and give me the next oldest car.

I got to drive one of their old cars while I was still in high school. After my first year of college, they bought me a used car with the condition I would start paying it back after college, and had to pay for my own insurance, but when I graduated college they forgave the debt. When that car died I was in grad school and they fronted me the money to buy a new car, but I paid that back with interest! It was a much better interest rate than I would have gotten with a traditional loan though.

My dad co-signed so I could get a small loan on a car that was used. It was only about 2-3k if I remember correctly. My parents were big on helping me become financially independent, but my dad would help out with the insurance, maintenance, and put gas in it once in a great while if I was having a hard time, since I was only 16.

When my brother left for the Navy he left me his car. I did get into an accident with it and my parents bought me a cheap car off some family. So "free" car twice. I did "pay it forward" though and had a girl I knew in HS who was in a bad home envoirnment and I gave my car to her when I bought my own.

I got my mom's old car (97 gmc jimmy!) LOVED IT... still my fave car... they didn't buy it brand new, but I didn't pay for any of it. My parents worked long hours at their own business and I ran a lot of errands and chauffeured my brother around once I could drive...

No, I had to pay for it myself. I worked after school at the mall and also did some tutoring/babysitting to pay for it. All of my money went to the car and at that time, it was SO worth it! I won't be providing a car for my kids either. I would expect them to work while keeping up their grades. The only exception is if they do volunteer work after school and stick with it. Then we may get them a used car or something.

I drove my parent's car in high school and college. Of course I would have loved for them to have bought me a brand new car. In the future I will make my kids earn the right to drive a car. If they wish to buy a used car, then I might be willing to help contribute a small percentage of the cost.

I drove my parents' "old" car when I was in high school and college. When that car got too old, they paid the down payment on a new car and I paid the monthly payments.
I'll probably do the same with my future kid(s).

Yes. Well actually I got a hand me down car, but got a new (cheap though) car when my dad got into an accident with my car!

It was a hand-me-down from my sister, my parents bought my first 5 cars (yes I was a horrible driver) all of them were not the nicest.
