We've all heard how important it is to read to your child. But my parents never read to me. They were too busy working, and English was their second language (though they are fluent).
Did your parents read to you?

My mom did, I remember her reading us all those little golden books. English was her second language but she's fluent. She also loves to read and always had a million books around the house. I think this really contributed to my love of reading so I'm very thankful for it.

No! I guess it shows that it really does not matter.

@Andrea: Indeed! Even though I love reading to my LO, I and many of my friends are perfect examples that reading to a baby/toddler/child really does not affect one's ability to read or learn.

@Rubies: yeah and watching tv. My parents used the tv as a babysitter and I turned out ok.

Yes, my mom says I'm the only one out of my siblings who would sit down and let her read books. I'm also the only one out of my sisters who enjoys reading as a past time, my mom swears there is a correlation!

I was a first child and my mom had all the time in the world to read me tons of books each day. I'd even sit for long ones, so she'd read me all kinds of interesting stuff (like books she was reading for her college classes).

Yup - both parents read to me starting when I was a baby.
We already have a library started for LO and will be reading to her from day 1 also.

They did. They also made us read a lot of books on our own..

My parents only read picture books and made up their own stories. After I learned to read, they completely stopped.

Yes, they would read to us every night. We would all curl up on one bed and one of my parents would read us a book. I lost count of how many times they read us The Hobbit.
When my dad was teaching me how to read, he made me read to him every night, and he'd switch the book once I finished one so that I'd never have time to memorize it.

My parents would read to me occasionally...like a few times a month.

Yup, my mom would read to all three of us. Loved it. And I love that they've kept so many of the books for whenever we have kids!

I think my mom did... I can't exactly remember. But I definitely got my love of reading from my mom, so I must have benefitted somehow!

My grandma watched me during the day when I was young and Ioved her reading books to me. I would climb in her lap and make her read all of the books she had for me at her house over and over again. Reading is something special the two of us still share. We share books
And when I was a little older my bro and i had bunkbeds amd our stepdad would come in our room every night and lay in the bottom bunk and he read us every single book in the chronicles of narnia. We loved it!

My mum did, until it got to the point where I could read a lot faster than she could talk, and I would get impatient because I wanted to know what happened and she wasn't going fast enough! Haha

My mom was busy learning English, but I was always at the library with the librarians when my mom had her lessons. I think she read to me, but it was simple stuff. My dad, no, I don't think he read to me.

My parents read to me all the time. My dad would wake me up every morning by reading to me. I disagree that it doesn't matter--I often wonder about my students who dislike reading/aren't strong readers and how they could have benefited from parents who read to them from a young age. I guess I'm trying to say that while of course not all intelligent people were read to as children, it still matters a great deal! A child can only be enriched by being encouraged to love books.

All the time! I loved having them read to us as kids. Once I could read, though, I wanted to read on my own.

YES! I remember when I was little, my mom used to read to us on Friday nights (or maybe every night, but for some reason Friday is standing out to me) and we'd just curl up beside her and she'd read something. I remember specifically her reading The Hobbit to us.... maybe we weren't as young as I'm imagining...
Anyway, yes! My parents definitely read to us and I think that gave us a love of reading. I'm definitely planning on reading to my children.

My mom would take me to the library and let me pick out a million books. She would read to me a lot.

My mom read to me a lot. I had an unending appetite for books and stories! Eventually I started reading to her / telling her long, drawn-out stories, and so she read to me less.

Nope. But that's likely because I was a total book hog and read constantly to myself. I remember her helping me when I was learning to read, but I pretty much just took care of it myself. I still love curling up alone with a good book.

My parents read to us every night when we were little. Once we were learning to read, we'd read to them. When we got a little older, we'd still read every night. I love books and I know its because books were always so important in our house.

@Mrs. Bee: Same as you. My parents never read to us either. They were too busy and English was a second language.

Everyday. A bedtime story was always part of our bedtime routine. I always loved walking to the library with my Dad to pick out new books. When we outgrew that, my Mom was always sure to include new books as add-ons to gifts, or made them our souvenir that she'd bring back from her travels.
Even if not for the language/literacy benefits, I have some really happy memories of quality time with my parents through books.

My mom read me Japanese books. I don't remember her ever reading me English books though.
