T didn't really have words until 15 months; at the time I was a little worried, but he took off at 18 months and became a very good speaker after that. R doesn't have any words yet at 14 months (he tries to make animal sounds and "talks" all day) other than mama and dada but I don't even know if that's deliberate. I thought he'd talk sooner since he hears us jabbering away all day, but it looks like he'll probably be the same as his brother.

My friend has a 4 year old and a 20 month old. The second barely talks at all! I think it's because she doesn't "need" to since she has big sister to interpret for her. I think it's pretty common for second LOs to talk later.

So far later. L was very early in speech. C has some words, but not as many.
My mom (child psychologist) says it's very normal for seconds to speak later. -
Not at all, at 15 months I think LO1 had 20ish words, LO2 is 17 months and has like 11 and most of them she just started saying in the last 2 weeks.

Both are early talkers! Second turned 2 last week and the day after, broke out her first 9 word sentence. She's less articulate than older DD was at the same age though.

Definitely. My first LO was in EI speech therapy and didn't even say "mama" until 19 months. My second is 14 months now and has new words every day. I stopped counting at 50.

No, she Had a lot of words around 1. LO 1 didn't say much until 20ish months.

my DD is almost 18 months and has a lot more words compared to my son at the same age. He had maybe 10 words. She has probably 50+ words and I hear her say new ones almost daily.

Nope! According to my notes LO1 had 46 words at 15 months. J is coming up on 15 months and has practically zero

Between my brother and I, 2 years apart, I definitely spoke much sooner (I'm younger) and even spoke for him a lot.

My first was a pretty average talker (although, hard to understand at times). My second was a late talker and I think it was because her brother talked for her a lot. She now has a bigger vocabulary and speaks clearer than LO1 did at 3. LO3 is the earliest talker. She's been putting together sentences for a few months now (almost 19 months). It seems like she wants to communicate just to keep up with everyone else.

My only LO is only saying Mama yet, but I can speak for my brother and I - you'll understand the pun in a second. My brother is two years younger than I and my parents were so concerned that he wasn't talking as early as I was that they sent him to a speech pathologist. They eventually figured the problem was likely due to me speaking for him all the time! My mom also says he just didn't have anything to say. Once he started, he took off like crazy, though.

@MrsF: oh wow that's a lot!! DH and I feel like we have dropped the ball with LO2. We rarely read to him, but read all the time to LO1. I think they have about the same number of words at this time though.

Kind of? LO2 actually had more words at 1 than LO1. But LO2 was slower to speak consistently. Her language explosion was more like 20 months, whereas LO1's was around 18 months. But there was one major factor that was different and that was that LO2 was exposed to 3 languages from 4 months old and LO1 wasn't exposed to a 3rd language until he was 2. I think my older child was easier to understand at 2, but my younger one used language in a more complex way at 2, if that makes sense. Another interesting thing (at least, to me) is that my older LO did not distinguish between languages until around 2.5, whereas my younger one has always made the distinction.

Hm I just realized A started talking way earlier than M. M didn't have her first words till 14m. A had hers at 7m. A is 17m now and I think on the brink of a verbal explosion. Her vocab has increased a ton since moving to the toddler room.

I have Goddaughters who are 4 and 6. The youngest one took FOREVER to talk, because the oldest one started talking early and never stopped - I figure the little one couldn't get a word in.

My first was about 15 months before he had any actual words, and speech didn't take off until he was almost 2. My daughter is about to be 12 months and she isn't saying any actual words yet either. I am much less worried about it this time around. My first is pretty articulate at almost 3.

My second didn't say her first words earlier but she spoke in sentences a lot a lot earlier.

@winniebee: no, she was later. We actually had her evaluated by EI because the Ped was concerned. She said its normal for 2nd kids to talk later because lots of times the older sibling will talk for them so they have no reason to talk.
