We have a similar problem - the previous owner used different woods (some light and some dark) and carpet. Now that we're getting rid of the carpet, we used a piece of the extra wood he left in the basement to match the wood exactly. If we're able to over the next year we plan to buy enough of the wood to redo all of the remaining spaces at some point before they discontinue that particular wood. We thought we wouldn't care but after living with it for a few years it's starting to get annoying.

ETA: If you want I can take some photos of what it looks like when you match the woods somewhat vs when you transition from light to dark.

I'll post a few pics in a few to show you different flooring butting up against each other in our house. One hallway has three different woods and the one thing that makes it all work I guess is they all have the same threshold.

@spaniellove: that would drive me bonkers!!! The grains aren't even running in the same direction nor are the planks! And they are different wood species and stain? WOW>

We have bamboo floors throughout our condo, and I would really prefer to have tile in the kitchen because I think it's more durable.

Our current house is all the same type of hardwood (light blonde wood) in every room except the bathrooms, which are tile. One thing I've found to be a slight problem is that the kitchen is all hardwood so when I get water on the floor (which is quite often when I'm doing dishes or cooking), I have to clean it up immediately to avoid any damage to the wood. There's already some spots where the water has turned the wood darker ...

Part of the reason I don't notice anymore is that the light-dark transitions happen at doorways where we tend to keep the doors closed, so you only see that you're walking into a room that looks different...if we had to live in an open space with different floors that would be another story.

This hallway has rooms that are closed off by doors, but the floors have such a contrast that allows each room to have it's own look. I would just make sure the "cap off" pieces are the same even if that means replacing the ones you already have.
