Friends of ours just brought their little guy home, and I'd love to make dinner to take over to them, but I'm at a loss for what to make. I know I want it to be simple for them, so the most they'd have to do is stick it in the oven to reheat, but I don't know where to start! The only thing I can think of is lasagna, and in this blazing heat that doesn't really sound appetizing. I'm open to suggestions and recipes!

How about some grilled, marinated chicken and a fresh salad? Maybe even some cookies!
People always bring heavy casserole type dishes over....something different would be nice!

I'm it his exact situation. I searched the boards and found tons of threads with suggestions. I think I'm going to make our friends some chicken enchiladas or a pot pie. I'm also going to bring over some cut up fresh fruit (refreshing in the heat) and some oatmeal cookies.

I was thinking fixings for a big salad, that they can just toss together, since she is really healthy anyway. Plus, I like to bring things like cut up veggies and hummus, pre-sliced cheese, crackers. Things that they can grab with one hand if needed.

Something yummy I can think to make is this:
italian sausage (boiled and I usually take the skin off)
green peppers
onions
can of tomatoes
I put it in a skillet and let it simmer until everything is cooked. Serve it with rice or noodles and a salad.I'm sure someone will think of something way better though - there are some yummy cooks on these boards!

My friend just had a baby in a heat wave in May. I made "holy yum" chicken (chicken w/mustard, maple syrup, rice vinegar and rosemary), broccoli prepped in the ziploc microwave steam bags, a big salad and something for dessert that I can't remember right now.

Rotisserie chicken, a really big salad + salad dressing, dessert and muffins for the morning!
A few friends brough breakfast goodies it was such a nice thought and I loved not having cereal!

If you don't mind not bringing traditional dinner items. I think I'd be really happy with good lunch/snack fixings. Fruit salad, pasta salad, a great loaf of bread, and the ingredients for sandwiches - meats, cheeses, avocados, etc. But I also LOVE that kind of food more than dinner right now

I bring muffins and fruit salad. I figure they get lots of dinners brought but no snack foods! It's always a big hit. And I offer to pick up takeout from their favorite restaurant

Whatever you do, bring disposable plates and utensils. The last thing I would have wanted to do was dishes. And the snack food is a great idea too. I was constantly hungry.

I brought my BIL and SIL homemade soup in individual serving containers along with a sliced baguette (each hunk of bread wrapped individually) so they could freeze it all and eat as much or as little as they wanted at a time.

Our favorite meal that was brought to us after our baby was born in May was grilled chicken with steamed veggies. We received lots of heavy, cheesy casseroles and grew tired of them.

My favorite food gifts when I had LO were when people brought a few smaller things.
One friend dropped off a loaf of banana bread, a box of nice pasta, a jar of homemade pesto, and a loaf of cibatta. Another friend dropped off two servings of a few different things - pad thai, lasagna, fruit salad (with a little cinnamon omg it was great), tofu babies (this delicious sushi type thing she made), as well as a bunch of pumpkin muffins (it was November). Yet another friend made a big batch of kale/andouille/white bean soup and had portioned it out for us so we could freeze some of it if we wanted. It was perfect. And, yes, we have amazing friends.
Then when a friend of mine had her baby I brought over a batch of chicken tortilla soup (same thing, one portion in a tupperware to eat now, two more frozen for them for later) with cheese and sour cream toppings, hummus, cut up veggies, pita chips, and banana bread muffins. -

A friend of mine had surgery recently and I made her a bunch of breakfast sandwiches and froze them. They just take a couple minutes in the microwave or toaster oven to thaw/heat up. Super easy to make -- just break one egg into each compartment of a muffin top tray (perfect size) or similar tray if you don't have one of those, break the yolks and swirl a bit, bake at 325 until just set. Toast the english muffins and add a slice of cheese and one of Canadian bacon, top with an egg, and put the sandwich in one of those wax paper baggies. Toss a bunch of them in a ziplock freezer baggie and freeze! I love that these are an easy choice for either breakfast or a quick snack. In fact, I usually make a batch each Sunday to bring to work for my weekday breakfasts!

We just had friends bring us dinner for the last month since LO was born. My favorite things were fresh fruit and veggies w/ dip, enchiladas, roast w mashed potatoes and veggies, and rotisserie chicken with sides. I got really tired of the heavy cheesy stuff.

Do they have a crock pot? I've made crock pot meals and froze them so they could just thaw out and stick it in the crock pot to sit all day. I always worry that someone else already gave them food and I don't want my food to go bad.
