I just had a kid show up at my door who in my opinion was too old to trick or treat in the first place (probably 13 or 14). But to make it worse the only "costume" he had was vampire teeth and he was using a trash bag for his candy. He then proceeded to ask me if he could take TWO. And we give out King Size!!! I was annoyed.

The teenagers! There aren't many young children in our area so most of the kids are teenagers, and they come in large groups. And yeah, they make zero effort to dress up.

We haven't had any kids yet. I'm sure the older kids are more annoying because they were when I took my cousin last year.

The only thing that bothers me is about what you are saying - those who make no attempt at a costume and are only in it for the candy. That being said, this is the first house I have lived in where we get trick or treaters and it has been really fun so far!

Totally the 16-17 year olds who come without costumes. I have a friend who tells them to drive to CVS and buy the candy themselves. I get too scared and usually make a joke about not being dressed up means no candy, but give it to them anyway.

The teenagers. Most of them are as tall as me and look as old as i do....and they put no effort whatsoever in their costumes!

As soon as I read this, the doorbell rang, and I had these 2 teenagers who were like Freshman, and while they were both really cute, they were just wearing normal clothes! I actually looked around them for a sec to see if a child was with them, and then they stuck out bags for candy! So weird!
I would have felt so dumb doing that when I was a teenager- going trick or treating without a costume!

A little boy just told me he loved my house! He was maybe 4 and walked up without his parents. He was too cute!

We went to BIL/SIL's neighborhood and had a potluck with some of their neighbors. One of the women left a bowl of candy on her porch.
We saw some high school aged boys go by her place and when they walked by us one of the guys' bags looked REALLY full.
She went home to check the bowl and it was empty!My DH and she chased the boys down and made them put all the candy back. HAHA.

We went trick or treating this evening and a huge group of teens (late teens, too) literally pushed DS1 out of the way so they could reach someone's door first. I wanted to slap them!!

Mr. Blue just said he was going to start handing out pamphlets about trick-or-treating. We keep getting kids who don't even say "Trick-or-treat" and then don't say thank you!

There were teenage boys in no costume playing football in our street with their pillowcases full of candy. Groups of teens so late at night make me nervous. We shut down at 8:00 now

We had a teen come to the door one year, at 8:45, with no costume, on his CELL PHONE! He said (to the phone): "hang on", and then to me: "trick or treat". I was so dumbfounded that I just gave him candy.

For those teenagers, I swear next year I'm going to have a bowl of good candy and a bowl of crappy peppermints. Un-costumed teenagers get one peppermint each.

Normally I don't really like the teenagers, however we only got about 20 kids tonight and they made up the majority. Last year I had so many kids that I bought a ton of candy so I ended up giving them HANDFULS, which they thought was pretty cool and said I was the coolest house, so that felt kinda good. haha

I don't like the teenagers who look like they're so unhappy to be trick or treating. Some of them look so bored. Nobody is forcing you to do it, and I'm sure you're old enough to buy your own candy by now.

@MrsBrewer: hahaha my husband likes to be the favorite house in the neighborhood.
By the end of the night we had a few groups of teens who came back a second or third time!! My husband sent them away. That's just rude.

@Mrs. Blue: We had that too! We opened the door and said "may i help you"? Then I had to prompt them "trick or....?" Then I got this super feeble "trick or treat". Finally I told them that there is more candy if they really yell it.
That worked.

@Mrs. Blue: Yes, that's what totally annoyed me this year. Kids just stick out their bags without saying "trick or treat" or "thank you". It's like this is some sort of ritual where I am obligated to provide candy. Blech! Handing out pamphlets on trick or treat etiquette is a good idea

Agree, hate the rude ones that don't say anything. And I'm not talking about the shy ones, I'm talking about the ones that have no problem shoving there basket to your preggo belly/treat basket, but just stare at you.

I went trick or treating as a teenager. We always dresses up and went out after most of the little kids (8pm). Usually we would get whatever candy was left and they would turn off the lights. We never went to houses that didn't have a light on. We saw ourselves as helpful because we cleared out the candy.

The teenagers that make no effort to dress up. In my opinion, if you have a mustache you're too old to be trick or treating. We had a group of teenagers come last year and they took the last of my candy. They maybe had a wig on at the most, and didn't even say thank you. There was a small group of young kids behind them that came up to our porch as I was turning off the porch light, and I felt so bad.
I said, "I'm sorry. The big kids took the last of my candy"

ahhh I was once a teenager who went out without a costume. I didnt even think about 'rude' then. I feel bad now!

I don't mind older kids as long as they dress up. I got a lot of kids - young and old - with no costumes or really lame costumes (Superman pajamas) and it made me sad, mostly because I think their parents didn't really care.

some kids came to the door and said "Merry Christmas!" and when they left they said "Happy New Year!" DD was so confused, haha.
