Do they want you to have more, or just keep an open mind? I have heard of docs discouraging permanent measures while the woman is still young just in case they ever change their mind (a friend wanted to have her tubes tied during her c section with her second, but the OB convinced her to just wait a few more years). But that's not the same as trying to convince someone to have more.

It hasn't come up but I've never felt like my medical team thought I should have more or less than I plan to. They were very insistent that we think about birth control plans right after the birth of my first though!

No, but my experience is that doctors, for better or for worse, are people too. Some have no manners or bedside manner! I have a really crass one who says people with children are unhappy and that it was his wife's idea!

@ktdid23: how bizarre for them to ask on your way in- like that should be a spur of the moment decision?? Then again while I was pushing I was saying to my midwife, "the second one is easier right?" They were like, um lets get this one out first, ok?

My OB is Catholic, doesn't prescribe BC, has 4 very young little boys and plans to have more, etc. While I was in recovery she came in to talk to me about a complication with my cervix during surgery that would make subsequent pregnancies high risk. I told her it was fine because I was done - no more babies! She tried to convince me right there that I should have more. Lady, let me try my hand with the two I just birthed first, please! Love my doc, but that boggled my mind a bit.

@Finfan: Yes!! I'm 27 and only wanted one. Every doctor we encounterd said see you in 2 years! When I said nope, I think I only want one, they definitely light-heartedly protested. Especially the midwife and doctor who are only children. Now my husband has jumped ship and wants another great be as well. We will see.

No, I don't know how I would respond! At my pp follow up my midwife without asking if I planned on another started talking about when would be ok to start trying again, and she said I could start trying in a year. I said "or I could stop at one," and she was like "yeah or stop at one!"

@ktdid23: This happened to me too! I am only 29 and was pregnant with the twins when my dr asked if I wanted my tubes tied. It totally shocked me. Did she not think I should have more?! I am not ready to 100% close the baby shop so I opted for an iud instead.

@marionberry: My OB asked me the same thing at my 1st prenatal appointment with my second child. It wasn't pressure but she says she throws it out there early for discussion. She says when it's the second kid, dads don't go to all the appointments like they did the 1st time. So she puts it out there when she says dad at the 1st appointment.

Never pressured, but she has inquiried as to how many children I want and advised accordingly on different birth controls and spacing in order for my body to recover adequately, along with letting me know when to start meds and to call for a refill Rx, etc. I really like my OB. Her practice is all pretty much middle class women, so I'm sure that's a factor in how she approaches discussions.

My OB had said to us "oh come on, you have to have a third!" Or something like that, but it came across as friendly banter by someone who just loves kids- not pressure or anything. I guess I can understand them questioning if I was going to request tubes tied etc as I know more permanent procedures require a certain amount of forethought.

DS' pediatrician comments on it a lot! Less so, now that I'm due with #2 but I'm sure it will come back. At all the well baby check ups (until I was pregnant) he bugged me about it!

My midwives have always said my pregnancies/births are their favs so to keep having more. But I've never felt pressured or anything.
