As a parent of both genders (as well as a friend to many moms with both), the consensus seems to be that girls hit their milestones faster than boys, even gross motor. I always thought that girls hit speech milestones faster and boys hit gross motor faster. But it doesn't seem to be the case within my circle of friends. My DD definitely hit her milestones (all of them) faster than my son. Crawling, pulling up, waving, smiling, talking, self-feeding.... She's been at least a few months faster than my son.

I don't think it has anything to do with being a boy or girl. My boys hit all their milestones way before the little girls in our families.

@Koolbreeze: Hmm. Maybe you're right. It could just be a coincidence then. My circle of friends isn't THAT large. lol.

I hate to generalize but of the small sample of babies/toddlers I know, girls seem to develop a bit quicker than boys. I have come across some extremely advanced boys though, but they seem more rare!

In my circle of friends and family, girls almost always hit their milestones sooner than the boys have.

I have b/g twins and overall I would say my son hits milestones first and my daughter hits them on time.

Not sure yet! Dd rolled way earlier, but DS sat up unassisted earlier. Dd got teeth first. They both started babbling at the same time. They were/are both wild vocal babies.

I don't have experience with a girl but my boy hit every gross motor skill milestones earlier than average, but has been later on things like babbling and waving/pointing/clapping. He's also a year old and has 13-15 teeth (at least 13, hard to tell about more because he doesn't like me checking, lol).

I don't have a girl to compare to but LO has been either right on time or early for all of his milestone. Speech in particular as been early.

In my family/circle, there doesnt seem to be a correlation.

I think there are too many other factors contributing to draw a line in the sand and say that one sex reaches milestones faster. I truly belive in the sibling effect, so that if you have a younger child around an older child, it might be that the younger sib hits milestones earlier because of the added stimulation and desire to be like the older sib.

I only have a girl, and she didn't walk until 17 months. I can't imagine if I had a boy he would walk any later then that.

When I told the pedi that DS wasn't rolling yet (as of 4m appt) she told me boys were slower on motor skills! I don't know what source or study she is referencing to back it up though or if its just anecdotal.
Note: almost 5m here and still no rolling or attempting to roll. He does love to "talk" though
