If anything I think it's more accepted and common now, quite frankly, I think it's irresponsible parenting to not discuss sex with your kids early and often.

I wouldn't do "the talk". It will be something that's talked about like normal spanning across the years as they grew up. Answering questions, but also taking initiative to ASK questions to see what they know already.

Same idea as @mrsrain, it's not really a good idea for it to be a one time talk. It needs to be an ongoing conversation as kids are ready/interested. My mom says I asked what sex was at 5, and she told me. Unfortunately my upbringing got a lot more conservative as I got older, so I never learned anything beyond the basics of how parts fit together (so nothing on consent, orgasms, safety, etc except what little was covered at school). I'll be very clear with my LO from the get go that sex is private, not shameful, fun when you're ready, and something to be careful but not fearful about. And masturbating is normal and healthy dammit. (ETA- All age appropriate of course!)

YES! And I echo much of what has already been said. We've already talked about appropriate touch and what parts of our body we can show at school. It feels so young that we are having the conversations (she's 4!).

My mom had different conversations with me based on age and we plan to do the same with LO. Right now she asks questions like how DH and I made her, haha. I try to explain as best as I can but it's hard at her age (almost 4).

Hopefully this will be an ongoing conversation as our kids grow and mature and not "the talk" once they hit puberty.

I will definitely have conversations early and often with my kids.

My parents told me nothing. Absolutely nothing. Looking back I find that completely absurd - I didn't go to public school either, so no sex ed. How in the world were they expecting me to have a healthy view of sexuality when it was a topic they flatly refused to discuss?!

I tell my husband it is his responsbility because we are about to have 3 boys because I am terrified to have the talk, however, I know it's important that we both do it. Neither of our parents ever had the talk with us and it's just so out of my comfort zone but really I feel like the talk needs to start happening so much earlier these days! Sigh!

I will never understand why our culture is so freaked out about giving simple, correct answers to this kind of stuff. During my last pregnancy my daughter had a lot of questions, and I answered them. For the 'how did the baby get there' one, I just explained it in a simple but accurate way. She was like oh, ok. It just wasn't any kind of deal. I refuse to let basic bodily functions be any kind of weird or uncomfortable issue.

I think it is a parental responsibility to have continuous, age-appropriate discussion about these things as your children grow up.
