I don't think DH and I have ever voted for the same candidate, and definitely not in a state or national election.

So far we have in national elections. We stand on the same side in most instances except one of us is more fiscally conservative, so it tends to effect local elections more

We always do. Politics is to me what religion is to many people, and it was important for me to marry someone with similar views.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
@yoursilverlining: agree with this completely! Well said
I can't imagine being in a relationship with someone I didn't agree with politically.

The funny thing is several of our friends are the same way. My girlfriends and I often wonder how we ended up with these guys. Luckily DH and I do a good job at respecting our differing opinions.
nectarine / 2834 posts
Definitely. We really love talking about current events and government...and since we are both pretty strong in our views, it works much better that we vote for the same person.

@yoursilverlining: Absolutely this. We both get too passionate about politics, and I don't think we could have gotten married had we not been on the same side.
grapefruit / 4582 posts
@mrs. 64: oh man. Not sure how you do that lol
We always vote the same
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
I'm liberal and DH is conservative. How we get along...I don't know. Lol
I find that neither one of us is an "extreme". I'm always open to listening to his opinion and him to mine. We still come together on things a lot. His first Thought is always a right wing one and mine a left. I also refuse to talk politics 99% of the time. I never feel like it ends well when that happens.

Yep for sure. I don't think I could date someone who voted for the opposing party, we would have different basic values so I sort of don't see how it would work.
coconut / 8483 posts
Yep we do - mainly because the party in our area supports the main industry around here that DH works in, while the other parties don't as much.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
Our political/social views are extremely similar, so we always vote the same way. Neither of us got to vote today because I've been in the hospital! Boooo!
honeydew / 7283 posts
@mrs. 64: @Danizaur: Same with us. We've been together for almost 15 years and have very different views politically. It used to be an issue but I think when we decided to spend our lives together we had to just let it go. We talk politics, but we keep it clean.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@yoursilverlining: agree..
I don't think I could be with someone who had extremely different political views - it's important that we identify closely with each other! That said, my husband isn't very political at all and takes a very backseat approach to politics.
honeydew / 7589 posts
@grizz: Same here. His family thinks I brainwashed him, but I just showed him another point of view he hadn't considered before, and he changed his mind on his own!
grapefruit / 4136 posts
@Danizaur: same! DH has actually gotten more liberal about things as time has gone on. Buuuuut I'm stubborn and am obviously always right and haven't changed much
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Nope. We are opposite on most issues and vote according to our beliefs.
bananas / 9899 posts
We have pretty similar views overall, so we usually do end up voting the same.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
My hubby isn't a citizen so he can't vote here. We tend to share most political views, though, so we often talk about the merits of each candidate or referendum in the races he cares about and I keep his preferences in mind when I vote (though on the rare occasions when we disagree, I obviously vote the way I prefer).
pomelo / 5257 posts
@yoursilverlining: SAME. I'm pretty passionate about politics, especially certain issues. I would have a hard time being with someone who disagreed with me politically because to me that would mean we had different fundamental values.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
almost always, yes. and for the same reasons as others--my political beliefs are aligned very closely to my fundamental values, so I wouldn't have been happy in a relationship where we weren't on the same page. I think the only candidates we might have disagreed on were during the last local primary elections, for things like public advocate and borough president (there were a TON of different candidates running, but all within the same party), but I think after telling him why I thought a particular candidate was better than the other he might have agreed with me, I don't remember...
nectarine / 2163 posts
I voted other, because we're citizens of different countries I think we would probably end up voting the same if we voted in the same elections!

@mrs. 64: My parents have cancelled each other out in the voting booth for their entire marriage. Their next big anniversary involves a shiny yellow precious metal.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@Penny Lane: same here!
We don't have voting rights in the same countries, but if we did, we would most likely vote for the same candidates.
honeydew / 7091 posts
We always vote the same.
An old boss had an agreement with his wife that they wouldn't go vote because their votes would just end up cancelling each other out anyway. But, he always went to vote anyway...
pomelo / 5720 posts
We usally vote the same but we definitely have different views on social policy and fiscal conservitism. It has caused some heated discussions from time to time but I think we both come away respecting each other and even maybe changing our views a little bit.

I know of one time that we voted for separate candidates for governer. She voted for a write in because she didn't like the candidate, but I was glad I voted the way I did because it was not a landslide election by any means. But in general I think we vote the same. She influences my decisions heavily because she has been involved in politics since she was wee and I trust her judgment. For measures we've made different decisions plenty of times.
pomelo / 5093 posts
Yes. I would never marry someone if I didn't agree on the pretty major political things with. We often vote differently on state initiatives, since those are less black and white.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@yoursilverlining: it was a huge criteria for me as well. We pretty much vote the same on every issue. It's like I double my voting power
nectarine / 2132 posts
always. i like to think i brought him to my side but i'm sure he would have eventually gotten there on his own.
