I told myself I wouldn't once we moved into our house, but I did yesterday and had a 20 minute conversation with a window guy. He saw me in the window anyway so there was no hiding. DH told me I shouldn't answer the door when I'm home alone. He's probably right.
Do you answer the door when you are home alone?

Depends. Like you if they see me, I answer. But I have a big dog right by my side to protect me.

Not to sales people! My office is in a window by the front door, so they see me there. I usually just tell them through the window I'm not interested. If I see someone obviously walking door to door, sometimes I can sneak away and ignore the doorbell too.

NEVER. Even if they see me. I don't feel badly about refusing to open the door to my home for a stranger... even if it is awkward.

I did once after we moved and it was some kid trying to sell Dish door-to-door. I said no as soon as he said hello and shut the door again. When I told DH about it, he was like your husband - he told me not to answer the door again. But then he expects me to accept delivery of packages from non-USPS/ Fed-Ex/ UPS people! Gah! Make up your mind!

No, unless I am expecting a visitor or a delivery. Usually when someone buzzes me and I'm not expecting it the person hides their face from the camera so it's extra-creepy.

Yes. It's always UPS or FedEx though. I'm not a paranoid person, but we also have a door latch.

Only if I'm expecting someone, my neighbor, or mail delivery. Otherwise, nope!

Only for a delivery or if I'm expecting someone. Even if they see me, I take the dogs into another room and wait for them to leave.
I always thought DH and I were super paranoid, but I'm glad I'm not in the minority here!

Usually...I need to stop, though, cause kids in this community are always going door to door with some fundraiser thing and it's annoying.
The UPS guy always says, "UPS" when he knocks, and I can see his truck, so I always know it's him.

Yes but it's almost always a delivery person. Our neighborhood is pretty densely populated so I feel safe.

Yes I do. We have a window in the door though, and if the person looks sketchy I put the chain on before I open it. We also almost never get door-to-door sales people so I'm not worried about that.

I check the peephole, first. I ignore solicitors, unless they're kiddos selling something I want to be eating, and answer for UPS/Fed Ex or neighbors I know.

Yes, but I have an intercom. If it's a solicitor, I just say I'm busy. DH loves Amazon so we get deliveries quite regularly, so it's usually the delivery person.

Yep. If it's not mail/packages, it's usually someone asking if they can hunt on our land. And if I don't answer, the mailman and the UPS guy (FedEx and Speedee don't do this) open the door and set my stuff inside. Which is perfectly fine with me and I prefer it.

I answer the door about half the time. It's usually just a solicitor, but occasionally it'll be important like the gas company coming for a meter reading.

I do. But only because our concierge calls and asks if they can let visitors up to our floor. No surprise knocks on the door ever.

I'll admit I'm a little afraid to open doors for stranger (see the post re: scary movies, specifically The Strangers) but I open the door about 99% of the time. If I'm busy and in the middle of doing something I won't get the door if I'm not expecting anyone...but most of the time I do and it's usually the ups/FedEx guy dropping something.
I'm curious why others don't answer the door...is it an annoyance thing or a safety thing...I guess a little of both for me but I still answer the door...should I stop???
