We haven't had to buy very many gifts for children of friends/family, especially past their birth, and it finally occurred to me that I've never asked what they wanted or needed.

If you don't know someone very well or know what they own would you guess at a gift or ask what they need? I just don't feel comfortable asking this person in particular because she seems to feel entitled about receiving gifts and I want to reinforce that as little as possible.
