My LO isn't really into tv yet so I don't have that issue, but I will have no problem saying no to shows for my LO. I remember watching shows that I probably shouldn't have when I was younger because I had older siblings or because my dad wanted to. I don't want that to happen for my kids.

I will ban sooo many. I could not stand Hannah Montana. SpongeBob is definitely too mature for kids!! ANy of the superfluous Disney Channel shows!

DD is just now starting to pay attention to the TV; DH has let her watch a few kid friendly shows on Netflix but she is more interested in dancing along with the Backyardigans theme song and then loses interest once the show actually begins. Since we don't have cable or satellite and just stream what we do watch we have a lot of control over it and rarely have the TV on except for the few times above and if it is on then we are either watching news or baseball.

I have banned DH from watching a few shows while I'm awake though.

We just cancelled cable again; we kinda go back and forth every few years, but we were waiting to cancel it again until the Olympics were over.

There's a lot of "children's programming" out there that I do not like. Particularly, I don't like the shows on Nick Jr., Cartoon Network, the Disney channel, or regular Nickolodeon. Maybe when DD gets older I'll change my mind, but it seems to me there are a lot of mindless tv shows out there for kids that do not have any real worth. And some of the tv shows we've tried (the Backyardigans and Wild Kratts, for example) seem really innapropriate for a two year, to me.

Right now, DD can watch up to 15 minutes a day of YouTube clips, and on Fridays we have "Pizza and movie" night where she gets to watch one full episode of a tv show (approximately 22 minutes). The shows we allow her to watch are Sesame Street, Blues Clues, and Clifford the Big Red Dog. And she watches YouTube clips of Disney movie songs (she really loves the Lion King songs!).

@Mrs. Jacks: I hope to do something like this, if DH will get on board. I never had TV growing up and I feel like we benefited so much from spending so much active time outside, doing lots of crafts, reading at a young age, etc. I didn't get TV until I was 17!

@Mrsdaredevil: You don't meet many people who were raised that way. I just think there are so many small and insidious influences to grow kids up too fast in TV shows. I mean I see things like iCarly on in patients' rooms and I wonder if these kids (or parents) are picking up on the references. It gives me the heebie jeebies.

We have so much more family time for not having a TV. But I will admit that the computers are a horrible time suck too!

I love OMG Mom. I loved her as Mrs. Dumpling on WB, and I've been following her mommy blog since she started it!

I read her post and totally understand why she banned it!!

I feel that same way about Max & Ruby. Max, the little brother, talks in one-word sentences. One boy I nannyed was 4 and obsessed with this show. He was a great speaker, full sentences, large vocab etc. After watching this show he started talking just like Max, one word sentences. It was soo annoying! I had to tell him to use all his big boy words. It took a long time for him to go back to normal

there are some shows I totally hate too. Like Yo Gabba Gabba. wow... stupidity at it's finest!

We let LO watch this Korean cartoon on youtube. It's called Pororo the penguin. It airs in english too! She loves it. That's the only thing we have her watch.
