I want to keep big things just for holidays, by it just doesn't work with an October bday. For example, he is ready for a bike soon. It would be silly to skip a whole summer...

With a birthday 3 weeks after Christmas, it's really hard to do this for LO! And we don't do huge gifts as it is, so if something comes up, I'll get it.

Thanks for your feedback, everyone! It sounds like a common theme is that, especially in the first few years, it can make sense to bring home new things as our kids reach new developmental milestones. Also, parents with fall and winter babies (myself included) have a harder time waiting for holidays.
I still plan to keep our toy collection reasonably small, and I'll do what I can to keep my son from feeling entitled to presents all the time. But perhaps I can worry less about buying him a new toy between holidays now and then!

But when she started stuffing their little bodies inside their treehouse, in hiding them went

I also have two end of the year LOs, so we do buy outside of holidays and birthdays. I buy books no problem or new art supplies if necessary. As for toys, it's more of a special occasion thing or as a reward.
