I have to! Only way for me to be unplugged is if I don't have access to internet.
ETA: Ok, I don't HAVE to. My boss would be okay if I unplugged but I don't think I can completely step away.

If I'm at home but not working, yes. But if I go away somewhere, not usually -- and never if I go abroad because I'm not allowed to access it outside the US!

@hotchildinthecity: I feel the same! I've been known to give the guys in my group a hard time for responding to emails on vacation!

No way, not a chance. I tell people I'll take phone calls if necessary, but my company respects personal time off and wouldn't call anyways.

Nope! I don't have a lot of clients right now. That will probably change in the next couple of years. Then I'm sure I'll have to check it or have it forwarded to another agent I trust.

Yes. I'm guilty of having my work email on my personal phone, so it's always at my fingertips. I prefer to stay on top of it than be overwhelmed when I return. I don't always respond but I just make sure that nothing is blowing up.

@MamaG: Yeah, my company pushes everyone to work work work. I should delegate but it's just easier to keep on top of things myself and answer a few important and urgent emails if I have to.
coffee bean / 42 posts
Yeah, just because I like to stay in the loop and be prepared for any fires that may arise. I usually don't respond unless it is something really urgent though.

I am co-owner of a home - based business so I take messages and emails on vacation - my partner knows I'm on vacation though so she will only msg me if I need to buy something real quick, so it is at most like 10-15 minutes of work for a week lol

Sometimes, I am trying to become more present and enjoy my time off.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
I browse through it quickly. I remove emails that don't pertain to me and only respond to ones that are super urgent. Otherwise, I respond when I get back. I hate wasting a day going through emails when I get back.

@Alivoo01: This! The time spent when returning to work. And everyone needs something immediately when I return so it feels even more overwhelming to catch up.
My DH used to despise it, but now that he's in a different role where more people are dependent upon him he does the same thing. I keep it to a minimum - like when he's in the shower in the morning or when we are in the car travelling somewhere so I'm not necessarily detracting from our vacation experience.

Yeah, I can't stand it when I'm back from vacation and emails piled up and I have to spend a whole day just sorting through things, back tracking, etc. I rather just file as I go along, answer simple things that I can, so when I get back I'm not a headless chicken! I def try to limit the email checking to just once or twice a day though so it doesn't infringe on the meaning of having a vacation!
persimmon / 1404 posts
No. I used to and I realized a couple of years ago that it's not worth it, I have earned every single vacation hour and I'm going to use it as intended! I'm also lucky that I don't have work email on my phone (anymore).
However, I check them usually right before I go back to work after being off so that I have an idea of what I'm coming back to.

It's a bad habit and I almost always try not to, but I almost always do check the night before I come back so I know what I'm heading into the week I'm back.

I'll usually glance at my emails, but only respond if it is something REALLY important, which is pretty much never.
clementine / 806 posts
@bluestriped bee: yes, but it's really to make sure nothing urgent is popping up and if it does, I can forward it to the appropriate person while I'm out. I try to give as much notice ahead of time to prevent this, but you never know. Besides, I don't answer emails that can be answered when I get back, but I check my emails at least twice a day to make sure I'm not missing anything critical.
honeydew / 7622 posts
Yes, but I am self employed. I have an away message up. I just scan them to make sure I'm not missing anything urgent/important.
M always checks his email and usually works an hour a day while on vacation to delegate/work on urgent issues so he is better prepared to get back to work. It has never bothered me.
pear / 1879 posts
It really depends. Most of the time, yes, I do wind up checking emails and checking in. While I can take the time away, too much piles up and I wind up getting completely overwhelmed when I get back to the office. Even if it's just an hour every few days, that helps me to enjoy my time off because I will have some sanity upon my return! I wish I could step away more
honeydew / 7444 posts
Yes, especially if i'm gone for more than a week or if I know there's stuff going on. I'll just check my blackberry but i won't respond to anything non-urgent.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
I do because it comes to my phone and I dot like to be totally lost when I get back, but only respond if it's urgent. We are not encouraged to work while on vacation though.
persimmon / 1386 posts
Yes, it's easier to just keep an eye on emails as they come in (on my phone) so that I can reply to something if it's urgent and as others have said, it prevents me from having to spend a bunch of time when I get back going through email.

Every chance I get internet access (we travel out of the country a lot). Being a small business owner, I have to stay on top of everything!
pear / 1672 posts
I breeze through them. I don't read them all. My DH answers e-mails and phone calls, which can be hard.
pear / 1697 posts
I usually check it once or twice towards the end of my vacation just so I know how much has piled up. Then I can plan accordingly for how early I need to come in and/or stay late on my first day back to empty it out.
clementine / 920 posts
I skim through emails when I am on vacation so they don't pile up but I also try to do it when we have down time like when I'm riding in the car. I used to have my work email on my personal phone and I didn't know how to stop checking it. I would be laying in bed at night and hear an email come through and would roll over to read it. Now I have a separate work phone that I can put away when I get home at the end of the day!
