I know I don't need to, but I always try to straighten up the room before I leave.

We always do - but mostly because its easier to identify anything I might be leaving in a clean room. The 5 minutes it takes me is totally worth it compared to the pain in the rear it is if I've left something.
I've paid for a hotel to ship me things at least twice, if not more.

Yup, easier to make sure I didn't leave any thing behind. And I have relatives that do house cleaning at hotels, it's tiring work.

@BakerBee: Same-- I'll pick up, throw stuff out, to make sure I'm not leaving anything behind. I don't make the bed or anything but I'll throw all the towels in the tub, etc. Otherwise it's too easy to leave something behind.
I don't usually make that much of a mess, once I take all of my stuff out.

Same as PP's, we'll throw things out and straighten things up a little to make sure we're not leaving anything behind. I assume the bedding and towels are going to be replaced anyways, so we don't make the bed or fold the towels back up, etc but most certainly won't leave garbage lying around.

i straighten up- towels piled in the bathroom, trash in the trash, but i don't make the bed or anything since it's just going to get stripped

Yup, and I also leave a good tip. My husband worked at a ranch one summer during college, and sometimes helped the cleaning staff with fixing up the rooms. It can be hard work and I figure it's pretty easy for me to neaten stuff up a bit before I go

Yeah, I know the cleaning staff works super hard and I want to make it as easy as I can on them.

I put our towels in a pile and throw the trash away.

I always make a pile of towels and make sure all the trash is in the trash can. If there are room service dishes, I try to pile as much stuff as possible onto the tray so it's easier to clean up. I've never bothered to make the bed but i do throw all the pillows and blankets on it. I just don't feel right about leaving a mess.

Yes I do. I make sure trash is in the bin, I put used towels in the bathtub and it drives DH nuts as I will also make the bed! He says its just going to be unmade to be washed. But I also do it so I can see I don't leave anything behind. And I always get on my hands and knees and check under the bed before leaving to check I haven't left anything that might have fallen!

@snickers: me too! My husband makes fun of me for straightening out the bed- but we are notorious for kicking off socks, so I blame it on that... not my OCD
