Yes, at least in the US I thought they are all MDs. My chiropractor called me the other day and used his first name. I did not know who he was. I said if it's ok by him I'll always call him Dr last name because he earned that title. Funny you asked since this was just last week.

I don't. They're allied health professionals, but not MD's.

*edit* I don't know what its like in the US, perhaps they are considered more in the "doctor" field. Here in Australia, I still get the feeling that they are little more on the "complimentary" side of health care, and have been tied into the anti-vax movement as well.

I call them doctor but I wouldn't consider them a medical doctor.

I think of it like a PhD. I'm not sure how much of it is based in science though.

Yes, they have obtained a doctorate, so they're a doctor. But they not a doctor of medicine as an MD/DO.
I've considered getting my doctorate in nursing and could practice as a certified nurse practitioner. I'd never consider myself a medical doctor, however. But I would still be a "doctor"

They are a doctor in the sense that a pharmacist or physical therapist is, but I generally don't call them Dr unless they introduce themselves that way

My brother has his doctorate in a science field but no one refers to him as doctor. I know other people with a doctorate who do prefer to be called Dr. So and So. I don't think of them -or chiropractors- as "Doctors" though that may be their title.

@travellingbee: My coworker has her Ph.D. in English, so we'll call her "Doctor" for fun, but she laughs, she would never call herself Dr seriously. Working in the medical center it would probably cause some confusion, haha.

As a lawyer, I have a Juris Doctor degree but have never once referred to myself as a doctor.

This thread highlights that I really think there needs to be a separate term for MEDICAL DOCTOR, and other doctorates. Because I do believe that obtaining a doctorate is a lot of work and worthy of high honor, so it'd be nice to have a title for them that is not easily confused with an MD.
At this point you'd have to specify "doctor of ____ (law, nursing, etc)
