The only frozen veggies I use are peas. Everything else seems to taste way better when it's fresh! But I end up throwing so much produce away because we don't finish what I cook.
Do you cook with frozen veggies? Which ones?

We have a few of the steamfresh mixes that I'll use for quick stir-frys... but fresh veggies are SO much better

i use frozen spinach and peas, and sometimes corn. the first time i went through the trouble of blanching, draining, and squeezing out spinach for a recipe was the last time!
squash / 13764 posts
Peas, corn, sometimes green beans. Depends what the recipe is too...I'm more likely to use frozen in something with a sauce, like stir fry.

I prefer fresh but I throw out so much so I try to buy some frozen veggies too! I had frozen collard greens last night and they were pretty good!

We have frozen peas, corn, spinach, and broccoli. Usually, I use the frozen stuff if I'm putting it in something, like soup, pasta, casserole, Chinese food, etc... If we're eating that item just by itself, I use fresh.

Corn, green beans, broccoli, sometimes veggie mixes for stir-fry type stuff. They are way easier/cheaper than fresh and don't go bad before I use them, plus I love to have them on hand for last minute meals!

I definitely buy mostly fresh but I like to have a few frozen varieties on hand for quick and easy veggies when I don't have much time for dinner.

I cook frozen peas, lima beans, and black eyes peas. I agree, fresh does taste better.

Yes! Especially frozen cauliflower. It's a great mix-in for mac'n cheese. I usually steam and then puree it and add it to whatever recipe (or box, haha) I'm using.

I use frozen spinach and peas and corn regularly. And I've recently started buying frozen edamame that you toss in the microwave and they are so delicious!
pomegranate / 3872 posts
I also really only get frozen peas because it's way hard to find fresh peas. We're pretty good vegetable eaters so we don't really throw away too much. I do keep some frozen string beans or spinach in case of a vegetable emergency. I'd rather have frozen veggies with dinner than nothing at all.

Mostly just peas and corn. Occasionally I'll use frozen spinach or squash.
pomegranate / 3729 posts
We use them all the time. We try to have broccoli, cauliflower, and peas on hand. Recently I started buying a chopped pepper and onion mixed together. That's a great add in for chili or eggs or tomato sauce. I love frozen veggies.
kiwi / 673 posts
We use them all the time, too. Like BPCMARJ we keep frozen broccoli, cauliflower, peas, green beans, and corn on hand. They're not as good as fresh, but they keep much longer and can be less expensive (if the fresh is not on sale) so it balances out for us. I don't really notice a difference in most sauce-based or sauce-covered things (soups, chili, spaghetti, etc) or when the veggie is pureed (cauliflower "mashed potatoes").

We use frozen spinach and collard greens often. Everything else is fresh.

I regularly use frozen veggies that I get from trader joe's. I like theirs the best. We buy spinach, green beans, broccoli, and artichoke hearts.

We try to keep some on hand for when we're in a hurry or if DH is cooking (he doesn't like to prep veggies and often just skips making them) or we just end up eating meat and some sort of carb.
honeydew / 7687 posts
I usually buy fresh and then freeze what we don't use fresh before it spoils - particularly bell peppers and even spinach I'll chop up for smoothies or soups.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
frozen veggies used to be my lazy food.
I would cook them up for myself when I didn't feel like cooking, but needed to eat something.
mixed veggies--carrots, corn, peas, edamame, green beans

I eat frozen veggies all the time. Broccoli, corn, edamame, and spinach are the usuals.

@edelweiss: i hear you! i tried blanching & freezing broccoli because we eat it so often, but it was so much work, it's less work just to keep buying it fresh!
coconut / 8430 posts
I use frozen bell peppers in pasta.
I just bought a pack of frozen roasted veggies today at TJ's that I'm going to try out!

I'm bad about using up veggies. I try to buy fresh to force myself to use them but they still go bad. So I buy frozen so as to not waste money.
honeydew / 7917 posts
I mainly buy frozen peas and edamame. I'm trying to add frozen spinach and kale to smoothies. I like fresh veggies but have such a hard time cooking everything before it goes bad.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
As a percentage of the veggies we eat frozen are pretty small, but I get peas, corn, and green beans so that I can make LO a quick side dish if I'm in a rush. Also spinach that we can't get fresh here, and edamame- yum!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Fresh veggies are so much better but we end up wasting so muh of it. I usually keep broccoli, peas, corn, and stir fry veggies in the freezer.
pomegranate / 3053 posts
Yeah, same here with the fresh veggies. My husband gets on my case about it all the time. I do buy organic frozen peas, corn, and peas and carrots from Whole Foods. I also buy their organic broccoli but they don't taste as good as fresh so I also have fresh ones on hand as well. I like a lot of Asian veggies as well but they don't make those frozen. Probably won't taste good frozen anyway!
apricot / 423 posts
we don't use frozen veggies. it is a bummer when we don't get around to cooking all the fresh vegetables before they start looking sad though. if we're able to catch the vegetables before they get yucky, we'll usually pickle them. and by we, i mean the hubs.
kiwi / 678 posts
Broccoli and peas! I eat so much frozen broccoli. And my daughter's favorite veggie is peas, so I get those individual steam fresh things I can just throw in the microwave for her.

I have a constant supply of frozen veggies in my kitchen and actually pretty rarely buy fresh unless it's something that either doesn't come frozen or that we really don't like that way (like eggplant, mushrooms, carrots, green beans, squash/sweet potato).
The frozen veggies we keep are the steam-fresh, unsauced variety: lima beans, edamame, sugar peas, sweet peas, broccoli, stir-fry mix (broccoli and peppers), corn, and cauliflower. If I buy fresh it's only when I know I have a meal I plan on making that will use it so it won't go to waste, otherwise frozen suits our taste and our meal planning perfectly.
squash / 13199 posts
I usually prefer fresh veggies but I do always a bag of mix frozen veg just in case, because fresh stuff dosnt last long
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
DH doesn't love the taste of frozen veggies, but I'll still use them in some things. Just rarely.
honeydew / 7504 posts
I use them pretty regularly. They're flash-frozen at the peak of their ripe-ness, so they still contain all the good nutrients, and as far as I'm concerned, they taste pretty much the same. Sometimes I don't get around to using fresh veggies until they're past their prime, so they've either lost a lot of their nutrients or taste, or I have to throw them out.
eggplant / 11824 posts
We only use frozen peas. The rest I don't like because the texture gets weird, and I hate the flavor of frozen spinach; it tastes so different from fresh spinach IMO.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
All the time! I'm really bad at using up fresh produce and I hate to see it go to waste. We love using frozen mixed veggies for fried rice (bokeum bap) and frozen french beans.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Not since our college days. We don't use the premix bags either.
But then we a ton of veggies.
